MLB Talk - 2010 Season

Jim Joyce should be fined. Then fired. Then tarred. Then feathered.

Notice how he didn't throw out the Tigers who argued the call? In Detroit, he wouldn't have left the ballpark alive if he'd done that.

If Bud Selig has any human decency he'll overturn this call, right now.

I was going to say if Jim Joyce had any, he'd retire, but he clearly cannot have had any otherwise he'd never have made that call.

talk about a great argument for instant replay on close, disputed calls like that. Totally blew that one, and obvious on replay. Not sure Selig can do anything, but seems like a case for overturning it and giving him the perfect game. On the other hand, first 28-out perfect game in MLB history, no? :)

Jim Joyce is gonna get the shit booed (and possibly even kicked) out of him the next time he shows his face in Detroit.

^ If it costs a pitcher a perfect game, on a clearly bad call, it bloody well should.

Overreact much? Jesus...

Yes, it was a terrible call. But it was an honest mistake, he thought he was safe. Watch the post game interviews, no one feels worse about it then he does. He knows he screwed up.

That said, this does illustrate the point for some sort of instant replay within the game, in situations like this. Hopefully MLB overturns that call, and awards Gallaraga a perfecto.

And the Sox win again, FYI. Almost as big news as this blown call, is Dice K having 0 walks over 6 2/3.

I can't say for a Sox fan like Tom, but as a Giants Fan (Who I think might have a different perspective based on the avidness of fan and geography), I would be inscensed, probably curse and yell a few times, but then in the long run I would get over it.

I've been thinking about this a lot. Jim Joyce is a damn good umpire. I like him not because he's the guy with the loud but hilarious Strike Call "Striiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikkkkkkkkk", but because he is an umpire with a great reputation. You say he will get booed the next time he's in Detroit. Let me ask a question. Has Ed Hoculi done a game in San Diego since the infamous incomplete pass call? I don't think Joyce will be allowed near Detroit again.

I guess being a neutral fan, I'm struggling with this because I really do like Joyce a lot. I've not heard but did he come out and make a statement? I don't like that umpires don't take accountability for their actions and hide behind the Union, but for some reason, I don't think Joyce is that kind of guy. Also, he did lose his chance to umpire Playoff games, and I think that, and a sizable fine, and maybe selig stepping in and giving the perfect game to Galleraga, that all seems like a reasonable punishment.

Joyce did apologize to Galarraga personally, and admitted he fucked up the call. I gotta give him props for that. (As they're already saying, Galarraga got "Joyced".) Still hoping that Selig can overturn it, but what's done is done.

^ And if one of your precious Red Sox had had a perfect game ripped away from him, how would YOU react? Hmmmm?

Don't belittle me, or the team Im a fan of.

If one of my "precious" Red Sox had a perfect game screwed like that, then I would be pissed too, and yelling at my damn TV. But I wouldn't call for the guy to resign his damn job. There have been plenty of blown calls over the years. Remember this shit:

So please, don't give me that. If it was this play going on tonight, Im sure you would just be saying well it's part of the game.

And why do you care so much? Go watch the Yankees, or the Mets...or whatever...

That wasn't even in the neighborhood of being close. Just terrible.

I will give Joyce credit though for being a stand up guy after the game. He could have just as easily said, "no comment" and moved on. I don't even know if the umpires are required by MLB to be available to the media following a game.

Then Joyce emphatically said he was wrong.

“It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the (stuff) out of it,” Joyce said, looking and sounding distraught as he paced in the umpires’ locker room. “I just cost that kid a perfect game.”

“I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay,” he said after the Tigers’ 3-0 win.
Contrast that with the Flyers-Blackhawks game where replay was used correctly, effectively, and quickly to make two right calls. One was a goal, confirmed after video review and since there was no immediate stoppage of play, the clock was wound back to where it was when the goal was scored and over 90 seconds were replayed. The other was not a goal. The NHL got it right, why can't MLB?

Remember this shit:

So please, don't give me that. If it was this play going on tonight, Im sure you would just be saying well it's part of the game.

Actually I have no idea what play that is.

I thought you had all Yankees post season games committed to memory, or at least on DVD. Let me help.

Re: Ump wrecks perfect game with bad call

I think it's being discussed in the MLB thread. Even Jim Joyce should be able to follow it there.

Well fuck.

The MLB has pretty much lost any high ground when it comes to instant replay. This will get pounded into the ground.

As a Tigers fan though, fuck. I missed the game (stupid work) but I was cursing at the highlights. I hope Selig reverses it but I realize the unlikelihood of that (and the bad precedent) but, yeah, I'm gonna be homer on this and call for it. :)
