MLB Talk - 2010 Season

Interleague play starts tonight with the Battle of the Bay. I've really become soured on the whole Interleague play thing of the last few years, but it's not going away. Might as well suck it up and enjoy it. Besides, it's the weekend, and it's Baseball. That's always a fun thing.
I don't mind interleague play, but the novelty has kind of worn off and I don't think they need to schedule as many games as they do. I also wish they'd mix things around a bit. I can see the appeal of the "Battle of the Bay", the "Subway Series" and other regional matchups, but it would be nice to see some teams you don't get a chance to watch. As a Twins fan, I'm getting a little tired of always having them face the Brewers. Despite that, I will be going to the Twins/Brewers game on Sunday.
I wish Interleague Play was more spread out across the season than only during one certain part of it. I also agree that they should mix it up a bit more; I think some matchups like Yankees/Mets, Cubs/White Sox, Giants/A's, and Dodgers/Angels (and maybe Rays/Marlins and Indians/Reds) should remain, but other than that, the matchups should be more random and rotated more often. It'd be fun to watch the Red Sox play some different NL teams for once.

I've been pretty excited about interleague play over the past couple of years. We'll have faced the entire AL East and AL Central in three years after this year.

Part of the risk when living as a sports bigamist...

Oh, right, I forgot, I broke a rule.

You did, but it's only a rule against nature.

How many times do I have to explain this? :brickwall:

Okay, let me repeat. Just in case y'all missed it the first ten million times.

- I have a standard touristy obsession with New York. I did NOT grow up there.

- Therefore I did not have the chance to develop a lifelong attachment to either the Yankees or Mets like a real New Yorker would.

- Interleague play is rare. What's the point of a rivalry if the teams almost never play each other? :vulcan:

- So therefore my logic goes like this: 1) I love NYC; 2) I love baseball; therefore 3) I love NYC baseball. Regardless of teams. Obviously I'm mainly a Yankee fan, but to root against the Mets would mean I would root against a New York team, and I can't do that.

I would feel the same way if I was into football - then I'd root for both the Giants and Jets. How often do *they* play each other? Think about it.

^The difference is the Jets can go screw themselves. ;) Watching the AFC title game last year was like choosing between a giant douche and a turd sandwich.

Also that exhale you just heard was Jerry Manuel keeping his job for another week.

I was lucky enough to be at the Phils-Sox game tonight, and what an incredible performance by Dice-K. It really seemed like now matter how hard the Phillies hit the ball, it was right at someone. I would have loved to see a no hitter live, and it was unfortunate that he lost it on such a bloop of a hit, but it was still a blast to watch.

Holy crap, I just heard that Jose Lima just died of a heart attack at 37 years old.
RIP "Lima Time" you are a hilarious, personable guy and I will miss hearing your stories on Jim Rome. :(

I wonder if Roy Halladay misses NL lineups yet?

Wakefield winning against Halladay...thats a reverse lock if Ive ever seen one...

And now CC is getting lit up by the Mets. All in all a good day so far...

Wow, after a gem of game one, the Phils get rocked twice. That one hit was scary (there's nothing worse than praying to just not get no-hit). We'll try again in Boston and see what happens. I have a feeling that, as great a team as the Sox are, that was as much a fluke as anything else.

Jets and Giants play each other every fourth year. Once again (and I know your story, you've explained it many times), if you want to root for both teams, that's up to you. But it is an artificial fandom. It's not connected to the spirit of other fans (and it is possible to be a transplanted fan that's just as sincere as natives). I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm calling it artificial (and, hence, not natural).

^ If you mean "artificial" in the sense that I didn't grow up in New York and thus "shouldn't" be rooting for New York teams, then yeah, I suppose you're right. (I "should" be a KC Royals fan since I live within their territory, and their AAA affiliate is in Omaha)

If not, then what? If you're saying I'm not sincere just because I root for both Yankees and Mets, then you're wrong.

If there was another team in Atlanta, I would probably root for them too... but hell, we can barely support one team.

I wouldn't be suprised if another city with sellout crowds all the time (Phillies, Cardinals, Boston etc..) had a second team within my lifetime.

The owners of the existing franchises would scream bloody murder if another team tried to infringe on their market.

Went to the Twins/Brewers game on Sunday. It was Joe Mauer bat day (for kids under 14) and we bought one of the bats from a kid for $20. We were goofing around hitting rocks and I hit a line drive into a window. That bat's gonna end up costing me big.

Starting to figure out the new stadium. As much as I like Target Field, I still think Kansas City's ball park is better.

Plus, all of those cities *had* second teams at one point: Philly had the A's, St. Louis had the Browns (now the O's), and Boston had the Braves. None of them lasted very long there, AFAIK.

Well the Red Sox seem to have forgotten the suck from past weeks, and have played great ball lately, beating the Rays 6-1 tonight.

Clay Buchholz is the shit. Papi is back. Carry on.

I heard that the first game of the Mets/Yanks series (Friday night) drew the largest crowd in Citi Field history - bigger than even the opening of the ballpark last year.

CC definitely didn't have his best stuff last time. Santana was the clear winner there.
