The players wanna get paid, even if it's pro-rated. A few decided to "sit it out", in MLB and NFL so far. They just get replaced on the roster by someone who needs or wants the money more.
I think that's why some of the super stars who already have major money would need to lead the way. I don't see the NFL going forward for example if Tom Brady, Aaron Rogers, Pat Mahomes, Drew Brees etc all together and more said they will not play.

The NBA at least is far more isolated from anyone else than the MLB is. I don't know why MLB is trying to do it in the teams actual home stadiums.
I think at one point they'd floated the idea of playing the season in the teams' spring training facilities. But since Florida and Arizona are both currently COVID shitshows, that probably would have backfired even worse than what they're currently doing.
