I was not a fan of Ventura's antics on the field, but it is so sad when people die so young. Condolences to family and friends during this tragedy.

Schedule tweaks to take place starting in the 2018 season:
- Regular season extended from 183 days to 187 (games stay at 162)
- Pitchers and catchers report 43 days before opening day instead of 45
- Other players report 38 days before opening day instead of 40
- Getaway day start times when either team is travelling or has a home off day must start before 7 p.m. minus any flight time over 2 1/2 hours (so a four-hour flight time means start time must be 5:30 or earlier) with exceptions for ESPN broadcasts and Rangers home games after June 1
- No games may be scheduled before 5 p.m. if either team played the night before in another city starting at 7 p.m. or later, with exceptions for sub-90-minute flights for home openers and holiday weekends. Wrigley Field afternoon games get six exemptions for the year, as do rescheduled games involving a sub-90 minute flight
- One game may be scheduled for the Thursday following the All-Star Game each year

The third week of March? Are you insane? It's miserable enough to attend a game at Wrigley or Yankee Stadium or Camden in the first week of April. Scheduling games when it's still entirely possible to have snow falling in half the league's stadiums would be madness.
The season goes too long. November is too cold too.
And that could easily be remedied by reducing the schedule to 154 games, as the union has been pushing to do for more than a decade. Ownership's response has always been that such a proposal will go nowhere without the players eating an across-the-board salary reduction.

As far as Travis Wood, I'm surprised the Cubs haven't signed him to at least compete for a bullpen spot.

My guess is he'll get a non-roster invitation to spring training, just as insurance in case Uehara or more likely Duensing completely shits the bed. (There also has to be some level of concern about Justin Grimm at this point, too, I would think.) They've got both Montgomery and Zastryzny to play around with as the fifth starter, also, so whichever guy loses that contest will wind up in the pen.
