The Padres are the new Marlins. Taking AAA to the next level...or maybe a lower level?

They really cleaned up in the Rule 5 draft.

As more details trickle out about the new CBA, the worse it sounds for the players (the "voluntary" program for the top 50 pitching prospects to undergo MRIs and submit their full health records to teams before the draft is absolutely abhorrent), and the shit that the Padres are pulling is just inexcusable.

Well, we saw in Game 7 exactly what happens to Chapman when he loses a few miles an hour off his fastball. The Yankees had better pray he can keep fireballing for a good, long time.
We also saw what happens when you over use a reliever.

This amount of cash is mind-boggeling. I heard the Marlins made a play for Chapman so the Yankees had to pay more. At least this isn't an Ellsbury/CC/A-ROID type deal (too many years)

But I don't think this is a gamble at all. The guy is quite an athelete.

Can you imagine what Miller is going to command? I personally think he's much better than Chapman.

Yankees and Matt Holliday reach 1 year deal for 13 million.

Well, considering what the Yankees are trying to accomplish this year this isn't a bad sign.

Only one year.

Another "if we can keep him healthy" guy...

Should be a good influence on the young kids.

How is 5 years NOT too many years for a reliever? Short of Mo, seems most closers have a pretty brief shelf life. And if his entire skill set is based off of throwing 103 mph, could be a very quick fall-off if it happens. Closers go from 'unhittable' to 't-ball practice' in minutes sometimes, it's a scary thing. And why constructing a bullpen is such a crapshoot. You grab a bunch of guys who did well last year, stats back it up, and then they just don't have 'it' the next time up.

Anyway, the guy is a beast, but 5 years on a closer is scary. I'd rather have 7 years on a position player that has reasonable health than 5 years for a bullpen guy. At least you can use the position player somewhere else, or trade him to be a backup, or whatever. When a closer loses his touch, he's basically now trash. And he's not exactly signed to a tradable contract, so you have to demote him to cleanup roles and hope he doesn't quit on you, or just cut bait.

Let's not forget that the last reliever to get a five-year deal was a guy named BJ Ryan, and we all know how well that worked out.

Well, I should have posted "too, too" :D I think the Yankees wanted 4, but had to give up 5. One can only imagine what Mo would have commanded in this market.

All true, but I'm tired of 7-year contracts... none of them work on the back end. (at least ours haven't)

....and he only got 47 million :D

I think that most guys who get the big contracts and extra years tend to even out if you actually look at the contracts. They are usually unpaid a few years on the previous contract and overpaid on the last few years. Yeah it's shitty watching a once good/great player not really earning their money towards the end of a contract but I'm actually okay with it. The only F'ed up contract is Bobby Bonilla's, that's some awful shit there. I wonder if walks down to the local Check Cashing joint after the check arrives in the mail.

Is that your issue?

I most certainly do have an issue with a guy choking his girlfriend, then firing eight bullets in her general direction, and then in no way apologizing or expressing even the slightest bit of contrition over his actions, yes. Domestic violence is inexcusable and those who commit it deserve to be called out for the pieces of human garbage that they are.

We all agree. We all got that. Many times.

Many many times...

Oh, boo hoo, I took a shot at your shiny, expensive toy. I'm sure you'll live.

You must not be able to sleep at night... knowing that the only reason you have your first WS title in 108 years is because of Chapman. I guess I should bring that up every time he's mentioned.

Justin Turner back to the Dodgers, 4 years/$64M.

Weren't the Dodgers under orders to cut their payroll, or did the new CBA change this?
