MLB Chatter 2008

Side note: I was at the Mets/Nats game on 9/9 and I saw something odd...Footage from the game was apparently being 'projected' onto the glass panels lining Citi Field (roughly where the Jackie Robinson Rotunda will be). What's this all about? Are they really projecting the footage onto the outside like that? If not, how did it end up there?

As for the Yankees: Don't get me wrong, I'd be a lot happier if they were winning. But I'm saddened by all the fair-weather fans here (and, even more so, the damned circling vultures). What, is it not allowed for the Yankees to lose? Does it mean they "suck" if they do?

I'm not a fair-weather fan. If they were playing like they cared and losing I'd be right behind them win or lose.

Have we been watching the same games? The sub-Little League errors, the awful at bats, the general flatness - I could go on. I very much hope they'll at least go down swinging with some fight now that they'll be home for the next 10 days. And of course - wait'll next year!

And of course - wait'll next year!
On that, at least, we can agree.

I just hope people don't start abandoning them left and right. They don't deserve that. No team does. If you want them to win, then SHOW it.

I'm eager to see what the Yanks do in the offseason. If they will be reactionary and sign the biggest names they can find, which hasn't worked out the past 5 years or so, or actually determine their needs and find players that fit the system.

I'm thrilled the Mets are 3 up on Philly. But, it's the one-year anniversary of the beginning of the meltdown, so I still have my fingers crossed.

Just when it looked like the Rays might really be folding... they pull it out and push that lead back up to 2.5 games, 3 in the loss column. However - and there's always a "however" - come Monday 09/15 we'll see just how far they've come and if it's for real. It's a three-game series at home against the BoSox. The Rays may have such a sparkling record at home, but I wonder if it will be enough to counter Boston's pennant race experience. On top of that they are now a full game behind the Angels for home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Since the AL West is officially locked up, that leaves the AL Central ... and it's hard to tell who is coming out of that one alive. That race may just come down to the series between the Twins and ChiSox at the end of September. Wouldn't THAT be nice?

I have a feeling that the NL East and Central races are all but locked up. Yeah, I now the Mets and Cubs have historically engaged in collapses of Homeric proportions, but this year seems to be different for each team. I don't sense the mentality of "here we go again" in the Mets. Could be wrong, but they just seem to be able to pull it out when they need to. The Cubs are just plain too good, though I can understand the nerves when Zambrano went down.

It's the NL West that may be the most entertaining. It's almost a classic battle of "who wants it?" where the leader only has a record of four games over .500. Anyone recall what the Cardinals' record was a couple of seasons ago when they won the World Series?

That would be great! I have tickets to the September 23rd game against the White Sox. Last spring I bid $500 for them at a charity auction (for our volunteer fire department), and with them battling for the AL Central title, it almost makes them seem worthwhile.

Good performance tonight for Tim Wakefield...8 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, and the Sox win 7-0 in a rain soaked performance against the white hot Blue Jays. It's good to get that first win down, especially against a team that plays them as hard as the Blue Jays.

Nice comeback from the mini-skid the last few days. Mike Timlin is broken.

I'm interested in seeing Colon get back on the mound tomorrow. He's been smokin' in Pawtucket lately.

Well they need Mike Timlin to play the Triangle in the Red Sox bullpen band...why do you think Eric Gagne was here?

And I am also interested in seeing Colon. You're right, down at triple A he was nothing short of dominant in his last few outings.

Factoid. Since trading Manny, the Sox have a 0.676 average (including Friday's game). They've gained momentum at just the right time, and with Lowell back and Drew about to come back, I feel good about their chances.

The wild card spot worked out pretty well in 2004. :)

Talk about a move that benefitted both teams, the Dodgers have improved quite well since they picked up Manny. Plus they are themselves getting healthier, with players coming back. Granted, it's the NL West, the division that could come awfully close to it's champ having a .500 record.

Looks like the Rays are getting Longoria back in the lineup just in time for that series next week.

Paul "HGH" Byrd does not impress me. He always seems on the verge of imploding, and he's done it today in the 5th inning.

Looks like the best the Sox can hope for is a split of the double-header behind Colon's pitching tonight. Hopefully there won't be any sweeps by the Rays or Twins so no ground will be lost.

Jon Niese in his second MLB start has shut out the Braves for 8 innings and struck out 7. Here I thought the Mets didn`t have anybody down on the farm. The best thing is, our best prospects are in the lower levels and I can`t wait till Fmart and Wilmer Flores get some time next sept.

Niese looks like a great pitcher and his curve is a thing of beauty.

Now see, I've seen the exact opposite. I have been very impressed by him. He is fun to watch pitch, and he THROWS STRIKES. Dice-K could learn a thing from him. He is a number five, but a damn good one at that. He keeps us in games and that is his job. Yes he gets hit once and a while, but that's cause he pitches to contact.

And tonight Jacoby Ellsbury pretty much ended all hope for the Jays with a 30ft dribbler up the first base line to give the Red Sox a 7-5 win. And with a Rays loss...(Thanks Yankees)...that means nothing is lost today.

Oh the irony! Cincy just acquired Micah Owings from the D-Backs, what, yesterday? And today, he, A PITCHER, doubles in the winning run against his former team (as a pinch hitter no less), and the D-Backs are 4.5 back of the Dodgers.

:(
