MLB Chatter 2008

No doubt, and not to dissuede the rest of the staff at all. It's just that Lincecum is owning those guys in red.

Him and Bowker too.

By the way, hear that Rowland was playing with cracked ribs, man I doubt I could get out of bed, besides play center field.

Yeah I did hear that. Now that's a gamer. ;)

Conversely, if a team goes in the toilet at the wrong time, it can have one of the great late season collapses of all-time and not even sniff the World Series. The '07 Mets, for example.

True. Thats the way it works. If the team goes on a hot streak, they win, if they suck, they loose. Incredible...my god that collapse still has to sting.

That collapse stopped hurting the day Johan put on a Met jersey. Sure it stings every now and then but it doesn`t hurt anymore and besides we just took 2 out of 3 from Philly in Philly.

It's official. I have a man-crush on Jacoby Ellsbury.

Two homers tonight and a force to be reckoned with in center field? Sheesh. :techman:

yep, times like that (100mph, going 1-2-3 through the heart of an order to hold a 1-run lead) are what justifies the Papelboner! :)

And Red Sox fans get an interesting look today. Justin Masterson, a highly touted Minor League prospect gets the start against the Angels. Heres hoping he does well.

The fact that the Sox are 15-8, with the amount of crap going against them (Japan, Injuries, the flu), shows what a quality team Theo Epstien has put together.

Sigh... I've had to sit through two Braves losses in a row again. After that streak of five I was having a little fun. The Nationals have one most of their game against the Braves now, and that's a little discomforting seeing as how they're probably not even going to get to .500 this year.

Makes the Twins look even worse. Instead of taking the craptacular package they took from the Mets, they could have had 4 guys, all of which are contributing on our major league roster right now:

Lester
Coco
Lowrie
Masterson

Oops...

Thought I'd update this one for fun and point out that Masterson went 6 innings today (95 pitches or so, could have gone more, but was supposed to be capped after 80-85, so did fine) and only gave up 1 run. 2 hits. 4 Ks, 4 BBs. Not a bad outting for someone who's never pitched above AA ball and was facing the Angels, a very good team.

Thanks again, Twins!

On the other hand, the Sox bullpen is basically all down with the flu, so the game has gone to shit since. a 4 run 7th inning so far, and bases loaded 1 out right now. Pitchers all just look gassed...

Perhaps I dumped him from my fantasy team too soon?

...naaaahhh...besides the occasional home run and the walks, he was shit.

Walks could be important. I was listening to his first at bat today (It's not on TV :( ) and is really is one of the more patient hitters in the game. Hey, at least they're better than strikeouts, which seems to be a problem with me this early season.

Yeah, walks are important, but Frank Thomas has a lot of strikeouts to go with them. Not quite as bad as Andruw Jones, but still pretty bad.

If he gets out of his hitting slump, I might pick him up again (assuming someone else hasn't already done it).

Yeah, most of the relievers looked gassed. They need to just get healthy. Masterson was very impressive though, I would like to see more of him in the future.

Masterson is another in the line of great young players the Sox have been developing. They've been eagerly watching his progress, and today was another plus.

I just finished "Red Sox Rule" - a book that focuses a bit on Francona's role as Sox mgr and a little on his career, and I'm reading "Dynasty" (prematurely named, I think), about the Sox rise from the early 90s to now. Talks a lot about building the team, and front office perspectives rather than just a narrative of how awesome the team is...pretty decent book.

John Feinstein's new book looks interesting - looks at a year in Mussina's and Glavine's seasons last year.

I wanna pick up Red Sox Rule, it looked good. But yeah, the Sox seem to have a knack for turning out very impressive minor leaguers. And not only are they talented, but they all seem to have a quiet confidence about them, and they know how to play the game right. The Sox player development system under Epstien has been a machine. I mean really, Papelbon, Lester (who is still a WIP), Pedroia, Ellsbury, Youk (to a lesser extent, he was already in the system), Delcarmen, and now still in the system Lowrie, Masterson, Hansen (who looked much better the other night, minus the home run), and Lars Anderson. And on other teams that have former Sox prospects like Gabbard and Murphy on the Rangers, players are having success.

As much as I would have liked Santana, seeing these guys become MLB players is just as fun.
