MLB Chatter 2008

Could be worse - he could be Carl Pavano.

I picked up a copy of the NY Post to read over lunch the other day. They had salary breakdowns of the Mets and Yanks. I couldn't believe Pavano was still on the books for $11M this year! :alienblush:

I caught the Mets-Braves game on Fox yesterday. Ryan Church is better than I expected. Maine didn't look so hot though. And that Buck-McCarver-Rosenthal trio is just painful to listen to.

Perhaps you'll be interested in the Dusty Baker/Tim McCarver co-written "Every Damned Thing We Know About Baseball!" book? ;)

That's being awfully generous. :wtf:

One of the greatest mysteries in all of sports is how in the hell Tim McCarver has been allowed to keep his job all these years.

Not only does he not know stink about the sport, he's a terrible broadcaster.

True. It would be a book with two epic parts by McCarver, and Joe Morgan. And then Dusty Baker would write a forward about how clogging the bases is bad, and the evil strike three called.

Nice of the Jays to get that early sweep of the Just As Evil Empire. A 4-2 start which could easily have been a 6-0 start if things had gone a little differently against the Yankees certainly gets no complaints from me.

I'm encouraged by the pitching, too... a staff ERA of 2.83 so far, by my calculation, and the only pitcher to give up more than three earned runs in a game, ironically, is Halladay.

Offence is coming together well, so far, too. Nice to see Wells and the Big Hurt getting off to good starts, since they tend to have poor Aprils.

Can't wait 'til we get Ryan and Rolen back!

No excuses from me about the Sox, but don't forget, you caught them on the tail end of a VERY long road trip, so they are burnt, and it showed. Hopefully going home will rev them up. Revenge shall be theirs! :klingon: ;)

Just a minor nit, but the Red Sox have actually slipped down the rankings a bit, and are only the 4th highest payroll this year. The Yankees are obviously still first, but the Tigers and the Mets both managed to outspend Boston this year, which actually SHRANK payroll by about 12 million or so.

The top 10, if you're curious:

N.Y. Yankees -- $209,081,579
Detroit -- 138,685,197
New York Mets -- 138,293,378
Boston -- 133,440,037
Chicago White Sox -- 121,152,667
Los Angeles Angels -- 119,216,333
Chicago Cubs -- 118,595,833
Los Angeles Dodgers -- 118,536,038
Seattle -- 117,993,982
Atlanta -- 102,424,018

Even the Royals are contenders after one week. The Jays will fade - it's what they do. :D

Dear Bob,

How much longer are you going to let Lyon do this to you guys? He's making Valverde look less like Wild Thing Williams and more like Nolan Ryan.

Dear Dbacks Fans,

Lyon took some hitting tips from McCarver and Morgan and got coached up by Dusty. Larry Bowa told him how to remain calm under pressure and we're sure that he's going to be a hall-of-famer. Just you watch.

Valverde thought your team would never get it and keep him and his wildness. Finally you gave up and now he can start trying again. Thanks, and we intend to crush you all year.

Love,
Bob

Oh, I'm aware of this, but I still hate Boston almost as much as New York. I used to not-mind them, but ever since winning the WS in 2004, I've found the fans (speaking in a general sense) have become pretty insufferable. In fact, I've actually found them to be worse than Yankees fans of late.

Winning will do that. I mean, nobody hates Royals fans, Pirates fans or Rays fans.
