MLB 2022 Season: Houston Warship: Go Phuck Yourselves

You can, but you really don't need those things. AI will be able to track it all from the cameras already in place for the broadcast, and likely a lot more accurately than any official on the field.

I used to be against AI making on the field calls, of any kind. But between the number of bad calls made and the fact that it is impossible to get rid of bad officials in any of the major sports, I've changed my thinking on it. We're nearly there on the technological end of it.

From the "camera angles" we see during games and especially replay, it feels like they need more cameras if only just for replays.

But too much AI will make the game less interesting to me (along with trying to control the length of games). MLB getting it into their CBA with umps to have more control over shitty umps could help a little.

But too much AI will make the game less interesting to me...

I'm not sure I see how making the games correctly called would make them less interesting? It likely would shorten games as you wouldn't have theatrical umps and arguments during the course of the game. It would be a dream for me to have a single ump (or NFL official) that was just there to be a point of contact for coaches on the field and to announce calls.

Bring on our AI overlords!

"The human element" has ruined great moments in the past. Poor Armando Galarraga would have a perfect game on his record if they had sensors in the ball, gloves and bases.

So John Sterling's home run call for IKF is this:

"It's RALPH Kiner-Falefa! Isiah...a playah!"

As for robot umps and the like: Meh. Not a fan.

I'm with you. I don't understand people who insist on bad calls by shitty umps being a Good And Necessary part of the game.

The tech isn't there yet--the testing in the minors has proven that--but it's probably only two or three years away.

Rays pitcher Drew Rasmussen is perfect through 8 against the Orioles. It's the bottom of the 8th right now, so you have time to tune in to the 9th see if he gets it or not.

Or if he gets pulled in the the 9th due to sabermetrics.

Looks like instead he got pulled after 8⅓ for good old fashioned blowing his own perfect game.
At least they let him try. Some managers don't even do that. Granted, there is some leeway regarding the pitcher, their past performances, and the state of their arm, but too often it definitely feels like arbitrary pitch count lines were crossed and then bye!

1:33 Luis Rengifo home run via two outfielders colliding and the ball popping out.

5:41 Not sure what the Angels were doing here but their fielding went to pot in the top of the 9th.
