That's why they're going to be replaced by AI at some point. With only a single person needed to relay the calls on the field.

I still don't know how you replace a 1B ump with AI for that kind of call. That particular ump was watching the base and should have heard to bell hitting the mitt a full second after the foot touched the base.

Supplementing the 4 umps with AI for strikes and AI/cameras for swing/no swing, that I could get on board with. Esp the swing/no swing. They either need an overhead camera, or change the damn rule to the bat crossing the foul line to be a swing.

The other night during a game I was watching, the home plate ump asked the second base ump to verify whether the batter had checked their swing or not; the umpire was standing with the pitcher directly in his line of sight and couldn't see dick, but they went with it anyway.

AI will just track the ball and speed of runner and whether or not the player has control of the ball. No person there is needed.

I thought they usually went to the first or third base umpire for those calls?

Not sure how AI will ever be able to determine control of the ball. What, a chip in the ball and a chip in the mitt? Then a chip in each of the runner's shoes and a chip in the base?

I mean, replay usually makes up for the bad calls in the field. It's mainly the strike zone that needs help.

Too much AI is bad juju.

You can, but you really don't need those things. AI will be able to track it all from the cameras already in place for the broadcast, and likely a lot more accurately than any official on the field.

I used to be against AI making on the field calls, of any kind. But between the number of bad calls made and the fact that it is impossible to get rid of bad officials in any of the major sports, I've changed my thinking on it. We're nearly there on the technological end of it.

As an additional thought: now that gambling is becoming a huge part of the sports industry, you need the unbiased eye of technology officiating the games.
