MLB 2019: Mad Max Beyond Astrodome

Word is that the Red Sox are looking to shop Mookie Betts and decline JD Martinez's option, because despite being a billion-dollar franchise that prints money hand over fist and is a year removed from a World Series, of fucking course they want to slash payroll.

Can’t stop stupid.

The Rockies have now said that they "lack payroll flexibility" this offseason, despite having made the NLDS last year and having a current payroll of $156MM, more than $50MM below the luxury tax threshold.

ie: "it sucks to be a Rockies fan"

Isn’t it about time for a new CBA? Usually the time teams start crying poverty.

The current CBA runs through 2021.

This is just the owners using the luxury tax exactly as they intended it to be: As a soft salary cap.

“Lack payroll flexibility” in this case would seemingly have nothing to do with the luxury tax, since the Rockies are $50+ million dollars under it. More likely that the owners have decided not to spend any more on the product. Which sucks if you are a fan, but makes sense if you don’t see yourself catching the Dodgers for the foreseeable future.

Tough game for me tonight as I love the A's but also have a very warm spot in my heart for the Rays.
Great teams, with a competitive consistency that is criminally underrated by the media - they both deserve to be playing a longer series.
It will be interesting to see the chess game of pitching matchups develop through the course of the evening.
I am a massive homer, so I take the A's in a very low scoring game...3-2.
Heroes: Semien and Olson who will drive in the A's runs, Laureano who will throw out at least one greedy runner, and Luzardo who will pitch three crisp innings in relief.

The more I think about it, the more I hope Epstein doesn't go with a comfortable choice, like David Ross for manager.

Ross would be an amazing bench or hitting coach under Joe Girardi. Ross can definitely convey what he wants done to the players, but Joe would be the firm-hand manager who would pull a guy like Baez when he starts falling back into bad habits again.

Before Javy's thumb injury, I felt like he needed a day or two out of the lineup to get his head on straight, but Maddon isn't the type of manager to do that. Trying too hard to be everybody's buddy.

I think it’ll end up an under the radar hire. Someone no one expects.

Epstein has already said that Ross, Mark Loretta and Will Venable will be interviewed, but they haven't contacted external candidates yet.

I imagine if the Ricketts are pleading poverty, they won't be spending five million dollars a year on a manager.

The Rickettses crying poor was infuriating last winter, and it's going to be infuriating this winter. They aren't like the Red Sox, who are multiple-time luxury tax offenders and are now in a position to lose draft picks if their opening-day payroll is over again. (Even though teams get like 40 draft picks a year plus comp / sandwich picks, what the hell does one or two cost?)

And the Cubs make money hand over fist, now that the Rickettses own like 90 percent of Wrigleyville. They're one of the most valuable franchises in all of sports. But they're just going to funnel their profits into a Trump re-election PAC.

The Rays are currently running a train on Oakland.

Meanwhile, Rob Manfred is guzzling Maalox like it's candy.

Yea...another home run derby....

Well, I mean, the Nationals won the right to get thumped by the Dodgers, and the Rays won the right to get thumped by the Astros, but ... hey, in a short series, you never know what might happen. Teams go on streaks, both of kicking ass and also sucking tailpipe. That's the joy of the postseason. You won the marathon, now it's time to win the sprint.
