Missing cast member (spoiler maybe?)

Tombfyre

Commander
Red Shirt
i thought this guy was going to be in the show? He seems to have died on the planet.

He didn't die on the planet, he is a recurring character, we'll see him again throughout the series on Earth.

A) It is a publicity photo. Where it takes place makes little difference.

B) If you are desperate for an in-story reason, perhaps he is "there" via one of the long range communication devices.

Yep, it's the ancient communication stones. The nametag on his uniform says "Young", but the character's name is Telford.

The medic Tamara Johanson, was tending to a wounded solider who looked alot like LDP. But it looks to have been the Asian man who sat next to Scott at the dinner table, and not Col Telford, who was last seen piloting a 302 fighter against the attacking Lucian Alliance.

I assume that even if he's recurring, they wanted Lou Diamond Phillips in the promotions because of his celebrity as compared to most of the cast.

Just like they wanted that guy from Terminator 2 for Atlantis? And then they killed him off in the pilot, after heavily promoting his appearance?

Oh wait. They'd never try to trick the audience.

I didn't see that ads for 'Rising,' so I can't comment on that. But Lou Diamond Phillips has long been announced to (a) be a recurring character and (b) not be a character that makes it to the Destiny.

See I thought that was LDP.

I thought - that was a bit of a fizzog, getting such a "name" actor and then killing him off with virtually no screen time.

Here's the scene, and Tamara called him Simms while trying to save him.

Didn't they also say he was the base's Chief Medical Officer?

Yep, kill off a guy that looks just like him, and then don't give him a single scene in the last hour once everything's calmed down a little. Brilliant.

As for the dead guy being called Simms, that's kind of beside the point. At this point in the game, without getting heavy into the pregame spoilers and hype, I haven't learned most of these people's names. Let's see... there's Rush (don't know his first name), Col Young (remembered it because he's kind of old, see what I did thar?), and Chloe (easy to remember, kind of slutty sounding name). The rest? I've got nothing. Medic? No clue... fat kid? Not sure... Angry black maniac cliche? Not the foggiest. I guess now I know he's Telford. First name? No idea.

I think if (at least) three of us here on this board thought their 'big name' died during the premiere, then they fucked up.

That's me as well.

I was like - well it MUST have been LDP because WHY THE FUCK ELSE would they NOT have their "name" actor NOT appear in Pt 2?!?

Glad it wasn't just me. My partner and I even discussed it afterwards. We were genuinely confused.

Oh and the pictures above, from those angles actually DOES look like LDP!!! He kinda has Asian eyes anyway so they didn't help themselves there!!!

I don't get why people are having problems with this. LDP was flying around in the air. A minute later, blondie medic is trying to save and fail a guy on the ground. Simple logic says this isn't the same person, even if they have a passing resemblance.

Because his character wasn't needed in Part 2?

Besides, they did have their name actor in Part 2...Robert Carlyle.

I just flipped through the episode on Hulu. I found where Simms was killed pretty easily, but finding Telford was a bit tougher. I think the last we see of him... he's taking off in his fighter. There's really nothing that indicates what happens to him after that aside from maybe Carter's throwaway Star Trek "We could only beam up the people outside the shields" crap. There way the whole sequence goes it's logical enough to assume that he landed back at the base when the evac order was given so he could get through the Stargate.

You don't get any shots of him fighting the enemy ships. It's just silly. It's like they overran on time, and just edited him completely out of the episode. Maybe they didn't even realize it. It just felt really off.

As for him not fitting in the narrative? Give me a break. If they're that committed to aping the BSG aesthetic, they could have shown Telford going in on a 'combat landing' before the Hammond flees the scene. It would take all of five seconds, you could give him a 'Dammit! *punches control consoles*' frustration line. Or if he didn't land, and they just beamed him out then a 'Dammit' scene makes even more sense. Show that he didn't want to leave the fight and that he's highly committed to this particular 9 chevron mission. It fits in with the narrative just fine.

If it was some no-name chin of the week, then that'd be fine but the fact that they happened to get LDP and were promoting him for months beforehand made it feel even weirder.

No, this was VERY odd and VERY confusing and, even though I really enjoyed the pilot, this was just plain BAD decision making and has produced confusion amongst viewers. I put this down to the writers, director and producers. Surely SOMEBODY looking at dailies saw that Asian guy laying on the floor and should have thought, "He looks a BIT like LDP - maybe that MIGHT cause some confusion. We should DO something about this!!!"

It's not a deal breaker, mind you but it's pretty slack - especially for people that have been making this show for about twelve years now.
