Mirror Bashir

Probably the latter. Mirror Bashir did not seem particularly intelligent; I highly doubt he had augmented mental abilities like the RU version did. MU Bashir may well have been what RU Bashir would have been like had his parents not had the alterations done upon him.

what i dont get is that the writers made julian look like a retard in "doctor bashir i presume" well even if mirror bashir didnt seem overly intelligent. he wasn't stupid either. in lack of better words, normal.

You know, that would have been a very interesting premise for an episode: Confront Bashir with an adult version of his unaltered self. An episode where Bashir learns that what he is today is not merely the result of genetical meddling in his childhood, but his own decisions and failures in the past. I would have loved to see that.

He obviously could not have been an augment, since Humans were slaves in the MU. How would his parents get access to genetic engineering? Would they even feel motivated enough to do it?

Was he really retarded? I just got the impression that he was doing very badly in school, but was within the normal IQ parameters.

i was under the impression that he was so far behind the other kids that (at least me) would call him retarded.
from MEM-A
In the first grade, while the other children were learning how to read and write and use a computer, Julian was still trying to tell a dog from a cat and a tree from a house. He never really could understand what was happening, but he knew that he wasn't doing as well as his classmates.
i'm not a child psychologist so dont quote me on this. but to me and my limited phycology training that qualifies as retarded.
mild or borderline at least.

EDIT: now if we have a child psychologist among us i'll correct myself but until then i stand by my "diagnosis".

What form of intellectual disability would our Julian Bashir (and presumably Mirror Bashir) have suffered from? For instance, if it were Down's syndrome, would that condition not have been corrected in utero by Federation physicians? The Federation does allow "limited use of genetic engineering to correct existing genetically-related medical conditions" (according to Memory Alpha).

Perhaps Amsha Bashir in our universe encountered some kind of pathogen or other infectant that affected little Julian while he was still in the womb, causing his intellectual disability in our universe, but that Mirror Amsha didn't encounter, so Mirror Julian grew up normal, neither challenged nor augmented.

we can rule out Down's syndrome from day one because he would have physical symptoms if he had Down's.
however since he apparently was healthy enough for his "improvements" to be illegal i presume that condition was rather mild. whatever he now had.

the infectant idea is a rather plausible one because it would explain a lot. but since we have (very) limited information about julian before he was "modified" (in lack of a better term) it is hard to make an accurate assumption.
i'd rather not speculate about exactly what condition he had since we dont have enough information and mostly i dont have degree in genetics. although i never finished my studies in psychology for that matter...

Perhaps MU Bashir was enhanced by the Alliance masters, to make him "the perfect miner" (or whatever)...?

if thats the case why did they assign command of siskos ship to sisko? whouldnt an augmented bashir with superior intellect be a better choice?

EDIT: what the hell did he command anyway? bajoran transport? modified cargoship?

Well, he did eventually become one of the Alpha Dogs of the resistance (along with Smiley).

But anyhow...why no command? Well, his temper would likely get the better of him, time and again....

I'm thinking Mining Forman, or something....

but if the alliance had him augmented they had to have a plan for him. i wonder what that was. i still think that Pavonis's virus is the most sound and (forgive me) logical choice. i doubt they gave a damn about a terran. especially enough to have him genetically enhanced.
guess you do have point about his temper. he didnt exactly strike me as zen.

but regarding the ship. since he was a raider or some sort of pirate i presume it packed quite a punch.

Absolutely. Down's syndrome would have been identified and corrected long before Julian's birth; presumably any genetic abnormality would have been corrected before birth. Therefore Julian's intellectual disability must not have been genetic.

Also, since genetic engineering isn't illegal per se, as physicians are allowed to use techniques to correct genetic abnormalities to a human "standard", the illegality of the procedure that was performed on our Julian Bashir lies in the augmentation beyond human genetic norms. Presumably then Richard Bashir could have had his son "corrected" to human norms, if the problem from which Julian suffered was genetic. Again we're brought to the conclusion that the intellectual disability was not genetic.

If Julian's problem was not genetic, then it is likely that Mirror Julian did not share the problem.

So, yes, I'm basically just repeating myself, but with more details that I just considered.

Never thought about Mirror Bashir and the genetically engineering thing.

Reminds that Sisko calls Mirror Jadzia "Dax", even though I'm not sure it was established she had the Dax symbiote or any symbiote.

from the look on her face when he said "dax, put the gun down" i doubt she had the symbiont.

i completely forgot about this thread btw.

Yeah, I think the we are supposed to infer from that scene that she isn't Dax, just Jadzia. Sisko calls her "Dax" by reflex, thus provoking the "WTF?" expression on the part of mirror Jadzia.

My interpretation of things from Doctor Bashir, I Presume was that he may have just have had something as minor as ADD, or the 24th century equivelant and that his parents overreacted and had the genetic enhancements in the hope of making their son "perfect".

I doubt he literally was as stupid as they made him seem. Likely just didn't have an interest in what was going on in school and desired to be else where, doing something else. Such children can grow up to be adults with the same level of intelligence as those who did well in school.

So, for these reasons, I have always assumed MU Bashir is how Julian Bashir could have turned out without genetic enahncements.

Possibly nothing. Smiley O'Brien did say the rebels had too many captains and not enough troops.
