Miranda Class???

^^ Because Starfleet and other alien fleets are supposed to be futuristic navies, not air forces.

For those that care about what is and isn't canon, per TWOK the refit 1701 is Enterprise-class.

I always thought that meant the *simulator* was of that class, but the ship isn't. The simulator was built to resemble the Enterprise bridge, so it would make sense to call it that class of a simulator.

But even though the ship as seen in the first three films is heavily refit, it's still the same ship. How can a refit - however extensive - change the name of the class?

From Star Trek: The Next Generation Episode "The Naked Now" (season 1)

45 ANGLE AT VIEWER

where Data continues refining the information he's
getting. Riker is watching over his shoulder as Picard
moves in to examine the information too.

PICARD
The Constitution class Enterprise,
Captain James T. Kirk
commanding...

BAM! That is the sound a canon makes. ;)

As a matter of fact alot of Pocket Book writers do not adhere to ST canon or what Paramount says.

Oh yes they do! The licensees must answer to Paula Block, of CBS Consumer Products, who approves all manuscripts for ST tie-in novels, short stories and comics , on behalf of CBS and Paramount.

But they were reading an excerpt of Kirk's Log from "The Naked Time", ie. before the movie-era refit.

It was still the same ship though. It's like when you read about, say, George Bush's early adult years in an encyclopedia, and the only picture they have is his official presidential portrait years later.

But, by taking that analogy to its conclusion, seeing George Bush being called Private in the text does not mean that the person in the picture would hold the rank of Private any more...

(In any case, we don't know what ship is in that picture, since no registry is given. It could be NCC-1000, the class ship of the Constitution class. Or a random ship from the same class as Kirk's, to exemplify the class for the noob reading the entry. Or anything. But the text speaks of the ship Kirk flew in "The Naked Time"!)
