Mindblowing OSTs

I still pop in the Bourne Supremacy OST once in a while. It just tells the story of the film so well.

Lately, I've been getting into the Chrono Trigger OST. I'm still amazed at what Mitsuda was able to do and I'm sort of not surprised that he basically made himself sick with stress writing it. :lol

"Blade Runner" is a great one to start with, I think. Interestingly, I don't generally think too much of Vangelis's music. But this one, I believe, is one of the finest soundtracks ever composed and an integral part of the movie (if you haven't already done it I recommend watching the workprint version of the film and look out for the final scenes which feature totally different music).

Other great soundtracks that come to mind (in no particular order):

- Donnie Darko
- The Machinist
- A Scanner Darkly
- Batman Begins
- I, Robot
- Total Recall
- Terminator (not easy to listen to on its own but perfect in the film, I think)
- Gladiator
- Koyaanisqatsi
- Powaqatsi
- Magnolia (mostly songs which I usually don't like in soundtracks but I really like Aimee Mann's stuff here)
- Solaris
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (not an original soundtrack but still excellent, I think)
- The Hours
- Star Wars (I don't want to pick just one films since I think they all had some great music)
- Indiana Jones (the same as with SW)
- A.I. (this might be my favorite Williams score - hauntingly beautiful, I think)
- Rosewood
- Jurassic Park
- nuBSG
- The Long Walk Home

Some great example in there, Total Recall is also by the same dude who composed the music for Robocop irc. My favourite tune isn't even on the soundtrack unfortunately, its the indian music which plays as hes walking through the snake market.

Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4, and last but definetly not least

Children of Dune

Nope, Jerry Goldsmith (Star Trek TMP, TFF, FC, INS and NEM) did Total Recall, while Basil Poledouris (Conan) did Robocop.

Peter Gabriel's Passion, from the Last Temptation of Christ.

Picked it up in the 80's, after going to a few concerts where the bands would walk out in the dark, accompanied by the lead track. It's awesome.

Vangelis, Williams, Goldsmith, Brian Tyler, David Arnold, Richard Marvin, Ilan Ishkeri... all have done great timeless work. However, not to sound like a fanboy here, but Bear McCreary's BSG soundtracks have evolved over the years into true masterpieces, culminating in Season 4 to a work of unparallelled nuance and beauty.

Yes, yes and more yes! McCreary's work on BSG is unparalleled at the moment. I haven't seen a TV series with such a great score and musical sense in...well... ever. I'm also a huge fan of Michael Giacchino's television and film work (Alias, Lost, Star Trek).

Other great soundtracks include:
TMP
TWOK
TUC
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Jurassic Park
Star Wars
Titanic
Transformers

Some of my favorites:

John Barry's From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, and On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Carter Burwell's Miller's Crossing.

Clint Eastwood's Mystic River.

Randy Edelman and Trevor Jones's The Last of the Mohicans.

Danny Elfman's Batman, Dick Tracy, Batman Returns, and Hulk.

Michael Giacchino's Medal of Honor (VG), Lost (TV) and Speed Racer.

Philip Glass's Kundun.

Elliot Goldenthal's Titus.

Jerry Goldsmith's Chinatown, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and Rudy.

James Horner's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, The Rocketeer, and Braveheart.

Maurice Jarre's Enemy Mine, Fearless, and A Walk in the Clouds.

Michael Kamen's Brazil.

Ennio Morricone's A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, Two Mules for Sister Sara, Once Upon a Time in America, The Mission, and The Untouchables.

Lennie Niehaus's Unforgiven (partly composed by Clint Eastwood).

Michael Nyman's Gattaca and The End of the Affair.

Basil Poledouris's Conan the Barbarian.

Alan Silvestri's Cast Away.

Brian Tyler's Children of Dune (TV).

John Williams's Jaws, Star Wars and sequels/prequels, Superman: The Movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark and sequels, and Saving Private Ryan.

Hans Zimmer's True Romance (riffing on the score for Badlands), The Thin Red Line, and Gladiator.

Another vote for Ennio Morricone's The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. It's incredible how much you associate the soundtrack with the movie - I can't imagine Blondie or Angel Eyes or Tuco without Ennio's music.
