Microwaving ice cream....

Warped9

I saw this for the first time this week. After dinner apple pie with ice cream was served for dessert, and I was surprised to see my father put his dessert in the microwave with the ice cream already on it.

When I asked him what he was doing he replied simply that he was never fond of ice cream when it's too hard or too frozen so the microwave was a quick way to soften it a little for only about fifteen seconds.

I was intrigued and tried it myself because I, too, have never been fond of too hard ice cream. Now I've adopted the practice.

I'm sure this is nothing really new, but that I'd just never heard of it before.

My dad will be pleased so many are following his example. And that his son finally listens to him.

I always put the carton in the micro for 8-10 seconds just to soften it up a bit before I scoop it.

I just take it out of the freezer and wait a few minutes before scooping it.

But that's not instant. I like gratification of the instant variety -- or at least very, very fast.
Yes, but you can judge and adjust the amount of softness perfectly!
And you don't want it too soft, which might happen if microwaved.

For me, scooping and eating soft ice cream is like playing bar billiards with a length of rope: it has an air of impotence about it.

I microwave really hard ice-creams for a few seconds to soften them up too. 5 or so seconds is enough to make it scoopable.

Fuck it, I'm lazy AND impatient.

Even on a standard setting, our freezer is very good. Ice cream is brick like upon opening, and takes anywhere from 15-20 minutes to soften enough to scoop. For me, the only solution is a 20 second microwaving to make it scoopable.

I'll nuke it for around 10 seconds if it's a particularly hard ice cream...but I try not to heat it too much, because then you get little streams of soup around the edges that become rather icky texture-wise when re-frozen.

I say: if it bends your spoon when you scoop it, you can eat it. If it doesn't bend your spoon, you can drink it. :)
