Michael’s Art Challenge Thread

Tonight's progress: New cylindric nacelle design and more details on the neck …

ZoRTpHX.jpg
There we go! I love the old nacelles, but these are perfect for the shape!

I liked the old nacelles, but I prefer these new cylindrical ones (just like everyone else seems to). The Malala now seems like it could be a precursor to the Olympic-class - especially with the Excelsior-like secondary hull (with its Yamaguchi-Ambassador undercut/scallop).

Yes! This is looking great, @Michael.
Thank you! :)

Yup, I'm a big fan of the Pasteur and there's definitely a lot of her in this design.

Another sleepless night and I'm finally done with this. Hope this is to everyone's liking.

Really nice design, are you going to show it from more angles? Would love to see more of this ship.:mallory:

Ah, sorry, I hadn't seen your post! Yes, I would love to do more angles of the Malala, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to, as it takes a lot of time. I might do some quicker orthographic views at some point, though.

I'm having a lot of fun with @USS Triumphant's fantastic idea for this month's contest of visualizing a The Adventures of Captain Proton reboot. And since I had some time this Saturday: Here's my modern day reimagining of the show as a gritty Netflix series named Proton, complete with genderbent casting of the adventurous captain as a woman of color.

I can't decide on which color scheme for the poster I should go, though. Any input?

I like the MTV pinks and blues in the first one which would suit a netflix show that's a throwback to the 1980s like that popular one that's a pastiche of 1980s movies.

Whew, it's been a while! It's so much fun seeing some of the things I've done in the past. This thread was a good opportunity to post projects that maybe don't warrant their own thread. It's also nice to document the progress and get feedback from the forum. So I think I'll revive it with a current project …

For the last couple of days I've been kind of rediscovering MagicaVoxel and I'm working on a series featuring the Trek captains and their respective corridors. Hopefully I'll add Picard later on. I'm not sure whether to go with Michael Burnham for Discovery or possibly Captain Georgiou.

Here's another one: I'm kind of on a Lower Decks trip, so I did Ensign Boimler in the corridor of the Cerritos. I find it kinda hard to translate the cartoony nature of the source material into the minimalistic voxel style. His uniform, for example, features a tad too many details to properly depict in such a tiny scale.

Wow! These are amazing! The bright, but out of focus background corridors really set off the figures. What about Acting Captain Saru for Discovery?

I think you've done a marvellous job with the uniform. And Boimler's hair!

How long do these take to do? And are they quite relaxing/theraputic to create? (I'm thinking of how I like to relax and build things with my nieces' Lego after they've got bored and gone to watch telly!)

Thank you! Yeah, the narrow focus is what I like most about them.

Yeah, I've thought about doing Saru for the Discovery corridor as well. Might me nice to have a figure with a radically different build for once. Ideally I would do all the characters I love. I've really got the itch to do Spock, Riker, Kira, Tuvok, Michael as well … In some cases there actually exist alternative corridor designs for those shows I could implement. Let's see where this leads me. :)

Yes, you hit the nail on the head, they are incredibly fun to do. I like to think of it as a form of puzzle. It's always a challenge figuring out where to put a pixel/voxel and where not. Time-wise it's mostly one evening for one of these models.

That's what I was thinking when I suggested Saru - I was wondering how he'd look in pixels/voxels. I'd love to see Kira in a DS9 corridor, too! :bolian:

Here's what I'm cooking up for this month's Not Trek art challenge: the idea is to let two of my favorite classic sci-fi universes – The Twlight Zone and The Outer Limits –collide in an epic battle. Both shows have such wonderfully creative “monsters” (some of them aren't actually monsters at all) that many people keep confusing as originating from the other show respectively. I've chosen some of my all-time favorite of these “monsters” and put them together on a fight poster inspired by the various Marvel vs. DC covers we had over the years.

This is step one, all the sketches and the layout are done. Step two will be creating the final lineart and the coloring …

Do you recognize them all?

:)

What a great idea!
Although, I must admit, I've barely seen any of these shows, so I don't recognise any of the monsters. I vaguely remember an Outer Limits (I think??) episode starring Nicole deBoer as a character imprisoned in a cell with an alien prisoner, but that's about it.
