Where else would you put a trigger on a PS controller???

As for me and MGS - nope. Never played any of the earlier games, don't own a PS3. Actually have never owned a Playstation of any sort. Its on my to-get list, though.

Sony should give us the ultimate option i.e. add support for this.

it seems like the controls are more "Western" friendly this time around. We'll see tomorrow, I guess.

Movement using the left analogue stick is still relative to the position of the camera rather than the orientation of your character, which - with MGS4 using a free camera system - is simply dumb.

Finished Act 1. Off to South America. :techman:

Does it still have that strange system for firing your gun where it treats one of the shoulder buttons like a trigger ?

I dunno. I think that's a Playstation thing where all shooters use the shoulder buttons as triggers instead of... well, the triggers.
For me, that was the biggest brain freeze thing when I first started playing PS3 games.

Both of you, not quite what I meant.

In MGS2, I think it was R2 acted just like the real trigger on the real gun you were holding at the time.

For pistols this meant that you would point the gun by pressing and holding R2. If you wanted to fire, you released the button, if you wanted to lower the weapon you released the button slowly! Apparently the buttons are sensitive enough to tell the difference.

This allowed you to point the gun at a person you might not necessarily want to kill immediately.

It could lead to all sorts of accidents though if you released the trigger too fast.

Oh, that. If MGO is anything to go by, MGS4 isn't that obtuse. I think Subsistance also went away from that, didn't it?

^I don't know. I just remember getting rapidly fed up with it and stopping after the bit where you have to sneak past a crowd of soldiers.

Yeah, i remember this as well. The reason why they did that was because (at the time) the PS2s new revolutionary system was its pressure sensative controls. Alot of PS2 games were using that gimic in the early days. Also, I think it was the square button that controlled the weapon, not the trigger. i believe the triggers were the inventory and first person view. Once in first person view you needed to hold the square button to lift and fire your weapon.

It's been a while since I've played it, but I believe MGS3 fixed the system.

Anywayssssss, I've got a deal to mention for any Americans (and maybe Canadians) out there. Wal-Mart is holding a fathers day deal where they are giving a 100 dollar giftcard out to anyone buying blu-ray players. This includes Playstation 3s. In addition to including Playstation 3s, it also includes the 80 gig Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 pack so it is possible to pick up a PS3 w/ MGS4 for only 400 bucks.

The guys in the office are playing the review copy at the moment (I hear lots of yells and 'splosions from the game room) but I don't get my retail copy till next week, so I won't be playing it till then. Strict orders NOT to come racing into my office babbling incoherently about the amazing stuff going on.

I'm REALLY anal about spoilers though, so as much as I want to take part in this thread I've got one eye on the door the moment someone says anything! (I'm lookin' at you rType, locations have been somewhat shielded you know!)

Well, just got the game and stuck it in. Traded in some games and got 50 bucks in credit so I splurged and got the Limited Edition game and the Limited Edition guide. Now time to watch snake smoking as the disc installs lol

Somebody help me out here, I've only briefly played the very first MSG on the PS1 (or was it PS2?). Anyway as I recall, the game mechanics were heavily tilted towards stealth gameplay which I really hate.

So is that what I can expect from MSG4?

MGS4 is a very different beast from the others in that it actually embraces combat. Its got a better aiming and shooting system (somewhat along the lines of Splinter Cells and Resident Evil 4). Stealth is apparently still the best way to go, but run and gunning is enjoyable as well.

EDIT; I'd also add that the stealth aspect of the MGS series is kind of over stated. While stealth is the best way to handle things, I've found it very easy to just shoot my way through the series, at least or the normal difficulty.

Thanks Clint. I might rethink my stance then. I voted that I wasn't going to get it, because as I said, I DESPISE stealth games (I find them to be incredibly tedious) but if it's more action oriented, then I might enjoy it more.

Check out a review on Gamevideos.com or Gametrailers. Should help with the decision.

Speaking of opening movies...anyone know what was up with that octopus opening movie thing they had going on. Was it a commercial or something?

Apologies, simply didn't cross my mind that a continent might be considered a spoiler.

It doesn't appear as though MGS4 includes a theatre mode for viewing cutscenes again after the fact, which is a disappointment. Or maybe it's only unlocked at the end of the game? The flashback system within the cutscenes is almost entirely useless, but playing around with the different angles is interesting. In one cutscene I briefly spotted
Laughing Octopus
whilst using one of the alternative views, given the angles I don't believe she would've been visible from the default/auto view.

Really? Prior to the actual game cinematic there is a movie where they talk about octopuses and stuff. It was a live action cinematic. I thought it might have been there since you have the Octo-Camo in the game. After that movie there is another movie with 2 martial artists fighting each other, one dressed in black and one dressed in white. I had zero clue as to why that one was in there as well.

Whoa... maybe we got a totally different opening? I got something totally different and completely off-beat.

I believe it's related to the OctoCamo system. There are advertisements for the various PMCs that can alternatively be displayed at that point too, possibly other types of advertisement also. All the PMC ads are available for viewing at Gametrailers.com
