Men in Black 3 Review Thread. *Spoilers*

What grade would you give the film?

I thought it would make for a good DVD rental but it felt a little half-cooked to be an essential theatrical experience. Maybe they didn't want to go too "Austin Powers" but I thought they could have played up the 1969 setting a little more. I mean it was fun and breezy but I couldn't help thinking most things could have just been tightened up and/or cranked up a bit.

It really felt like the chemistry was off between Smith and Jones as well. I realize K was supposed to be a bit more distant and grumpy than usual (I guess because of the death of Zed or whatever), but it really looked like Jones just did NOT want to be there.

He looked completely disinterested from start to finish. Thankfully Brolin brought back at least some of the old charm that we remember from the other movies.

- I give it a B. It was entertaining.

- I didn't miss Tommy Lee Jones at all. His presence was felt through Josh Brolin, who was quite good. He did a phenomenal job as George Bush in W. and his Tommy Lee Jones impression was equally great.

- I noticed that Will Smith's eyes were a bit red in some scenes. Drinking? Pot? Not enough sleep?

- What happened to Rip Torn? Why wasn't he there?

- The creature we saw on the stove is based on the blobfish, which is a real animal.

- After the movie, I picked up two small pies. One apple and one strawberry/rhubarb. The movie made me hungry for some.

He only agreed to even do the movie at all if his screen time was reduced.
Good to know that he wasn't shafted. I read that he's interested in a 4th installment though.

Not really all that funny, but fortunately it had an interesting enough storyline to make up for that. Mind you some of the attempted jokes were groaners. "Mommy, why is the President drinking my milk?"
Missed that line. I hear Will Smith wants to play Obama.

"The Viagrans want to discuss a revolutionary new pill."
I thought that was cute.

But the movie did have some solid laughs, like the above mentioned euology from O.
I thought it was unfunny and it made me cringe a bit. I felt embarassed for Emma Thompson. The funny part for me was K's short eulogy.

Before the film I got to see the trailers Skyfall as well as The Amazing Spider-Man which I'll say I'm getting a bit interested in.
I got Total Recall. Are they not going to Mars?

Nope. This movie is closer to the source material which didn't include a trip to Mars.

And yeah, you can't go wrong with Rick Baker when it comes to creature effects and makeup.

I liked J's line about all models being aliens as well. Kinda makes sense, considering how perfect and flawless they look next to the rest of us. :p

What happened to Rip Torn? Why wasn't he there?

It's probably related to his recent legal troubles; in 2010 he pled guilty to several charges, including "reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and the illegal carrying of a firearm and was given a two-and-a-half-year suspended jail sentence and three years probation." (Sourced from Wikipedia but it's accurate in this case).

His character on 30 Rock was offed after the incident. I suspect Zed suffered a similar fate.

I agree that Jones definitely seemed disinterested and bored, but I think the distant and grumpy routine was intentional. I don't even think it had anything to do with Zed's death (since he seemed rather indifferent about that), but more to due with the arrival of Boris and the potential that his secret about J would get revealed (which it eventually did). At least, that's how I took it.

It probably didn't help that he looked like he had aged about a thousand years, while Will Smith still looked almost EXACTLY the same.

That would probably make most people a bit grumpy. Lol

Yeah, I knew about his antics. Oh well. Looks like he's working on other stuff.

No Frank the Pug means I'm not seeing it.

A giant black and white portrait of Frank does hang above the bed in J's apartment. ;)

He's also on a poster at Coney Island in 1969 that says "The Incredible Speaking Dog."

^ I would assume that's why he put a big smiley face indicating that he wasn't serious in his post. I just wanted to mention the two Frank sightings in the movie anyway.

I'm just glad the crass slug-things weren't in it as much as they were used in the second movie.

I'll agree with this for most of the beginning, though K's scene at home with the gun in hand on the phone did tug a bit. Jones delivered a solid performance in that scene.

I'm not sure what order the scenes were filmed, but the last scene in the diner felt "right" to me. It was the chemistry I had been looking for earlier in the film. Ah well, I loved Brolin's "K" and it was one of the highlights I was looking forward to in this film.

Just of out curiosity were the rumors that the movie was setting up a way for Josh Brolin to continue to play K if they do future movies true? I don't mind spoilers.

Not really, but we're talking about time-travel here so anything is possible in a movie series like this.

Hmm, maybe if they could devise a story where the young K leaps into the future. Now there's one helluva paradox---old K buys the farm and the young K leaps into the future to take his place. Thats just so weird.
