Memory Omega - New Trek Prose and Comics Wiki

I'm almost afraid to even reopen this can of worms, but how do you guys think we should handle multiple inconsistent sources, like the different versions of the Earth-Romulan War, or the different stories about post-TNG Ro?

Acknowledge it, say that one source says X and the other Y and highlight the fact that there are multiple, yet different sources that give differing interpretations.

Dimesdan hit the nail on the head, at least when it comes to minor conflicts as would be the case with the Ro article given in your example. My preferred option would be to keep the conflicting information in the correct chronological placement with the other information. This conflict would be clearly highlighted as has been done on the Wookiepeedia "Legends" articles. Rather than garish boxes at the beginning and ending, I would opt for a different color "box" that would fit around the conflicting information.

With regards to massive great conflicts such as the Earth-Romulan War, we could either plump for having them in the one article, but in clearly marked sections or go for separate articles.

The box idea sounds good to me for the smaller inconsistencies.
I'm really not as bothered by putting the stuff together at MO since it's just books and comics, but I do think we should at least make it clear what does and doesn't fit together.

Thanks, I was thinking from a purely academic writing point of view which some seem to think Wiki's are or should be and if there are inconsistencies, one needs to highlight them and give a citation for each source. for example:

The Dominion war novels give an explanation to the actions and whereabouts of Ro Laren post Preemptive Strike where she met up with Captain Picard in around 2373. Where as, the Avatar duology that kicked off the Post What we leave behind series of novels which began in 2376 that this was the first time she had seen Captain Picard since joining the Marquis.

Maybe a stupid question but will this site still include the movies and series?

How does the STO Wiki handle that? Perhaps there should just be links to Memory Alpha pages about screen content?

Sometimes related Wikis work that way -- rather than duplicating content, they just link to each other. For instance, on the Power Rangers/Super Sentai wiki, in articles about crossovers between Super Sentai and Kamen Rider or Metal Heroes series, the links to the guest characters go to their articles on the Kamen Rider or Metal Heroes wikis. (On the other hand, the Arrowverse Wiki has now fully incorporated Supergirl, even though the independent Supergirl Wiki still exists.)

I was wondering about this too. Even if it doesn't feature them in the pages, the site probably should acknowledge the episodes and movies since you do need them for the information in the books and comics to make sense.
EDIT: As for the other Wikis, I'm actually trying to avoid them as much as possible just so I don't accidentally copy them.

Just based on a random look-up on the STOWiki, it looks like they just link back to Memory Alpha for anything they reference but that doesn't actually appear in-game. You can see that everything that appears in-game gets an internal link, and everything that doesn't gets an external one.

From the first sentence of the first post:

Geez Dan, I know. I read that but you have to admit a database for just treklit and comics would benefit greatly from the foundation laid by the actual on screen source material being included.

I don't think that we'll ignore stuff from the episodes. It is pretty much impossible to write an article about any major character that doesn't include the episodes.

I think they mean articles about the episodes, though, not just mentions of any sort; that's what the earlier conversation was about, if that information should be reproduced on MO or if they should take the tack of just linking out to MA for episode articles.

Well, the "fear" of linking to MA is that a reader might get interested in one their informative episode articles, which would result in MO "losing" readers. On the other side we can't just "improvise" better episode articles than MA. They'd probably look like MB's episode articles and only consist of a quick introductury sentence and an infobox and that's not really helpful at all. Also, our focus doesn't lie on episodes, so at least for now I'd opt for MA linking.

Well given what you asked and the way you phrased it, I didn't want to assume otherwise.

Of course it would benefit the site, but it would be needlessly replicating information on other sites as you worded your original question, If an author of an article writes something about the events of say, the Prey trilogy, I think they should create an external link to other sites for information about the events of Star Trek III, Insurrection, Captive Pursuit or any of the other filmed events the trilogy is built around.

Sounds good. Thanks.

Thankfully, others got the gist of my question and answered me...not sure why we had to start with your condescension but thanks I guess.
