Mel Gibson in Malibu Car Smash.

^ "Ignorance is bliss" is definitely applicable here. For every Mel Gibson you know about, you've probably inadvertently furthered the interests of thousands of people just like him.

Not knowing and doing nothing is not the same as knowing and doing nothing. I mean, you can't very well boycott an actor for doing something you don't know he's done.

I like Mel. He's a funny, cool guy. He's got a drinking problem and seems awfully sad behind all that yelling, but I don't really have a problem with him.

Now, if he starts raping children, I'll boycott him like that other piece of trash "artist" hiding in France or whatever other armpit of Europe he calls home. Till then, what he says on his own time doesn't affect my enjoyment of his vast library of awesome films.

Hope he's OK and continues making great movies.

Given the number of people involved in producing anything at all - a film, a bottle of milk, a piece of software - it's a safe bet that several of them are utterly reprehensible human beings. Why are you helping them? Talk about sticking your head in the sand.

Your loss; Polanski makes far better films than Mel Gibson has or ever will.

People can have whatever thoughts and beliefs they want, I've no problems with that. Hugh Laurie? Love the guy, awesome, awesome actor. For all I know he's a huge racist. He doesn't express that racism in hugely public ways. That's why I'm off the Mel train, he expresses his bile in huge, public, ways and further tries and to justify it by saying his bile is OK by God. Sorry, a bit different than all of the "unkown" bigoted assholes that are out there.

Other than Apocalypto I couldn't think of anything he's done since Passion of the Christ or starred in since Signs. I had to look up his page to see what he's been doing. I've not watched any of his directorial efforts and I don't think I ever will.

I'm very doubtful I'll watch anything new of his again either. It's as much to do with his very public comments/actions as it is he's done increasingly uninteresting work. All around he's become a huge disappointment.

^I think he just chose Hugh Laurie's name at random.

It was a pretty random name to choose, at that.

Yeah, he did not say Hugh Laurie was but that if he was then Laurie is good at hiding it.

Just a name I picked. And I love the show House, so.

Yes, my point is that any actor "could" be something but until we know ot doesn't matter. Mel puts his views right out there, has recently expressed them in severe ways and is fairly unapologetic about them.

Possibly. But I don't know about these unnamed 'thousands'. I know about Mel. And I know about Mel because Mel himself has made his hateful persona virtually IMPOSSIBLE to ignore - even by me, a person who does not normally follow celebrities, as a rule, and who thus is not normally up to speed on relative levels of douchbaggery on the part of celebrities. I mean, seriously - a celebrity has to have shown Olympic class levels of douchebaggery on multiple occasions for him to make it onto my radar!

Mel has made, it seems, a special point of behaving like an utter jackass on numerous occasions. And not just in an 'I'm a run-of-the-mill spoiled celebrity jackass' or 'I'm a run-of-the-mill wacky celebrity jackass" sort of way, either. I mean, this guy has spewed some of the most vile, hateful, bigoted, and disrespectful utterances I have ever heard - both in pubic and in private. That tape of him yelling at his ex-girlfriend on the phone? I mean, that was more than a guy being mildly pissed off. That is a guy with a red-alert serious anger management problem. And even more than that, the anger did not seem to be directed at just one person there. There was a lot of hatred and pent up rage at women in general in that diatribe. To the point where, frankly, as a woman, the guy scares the ever-loving shit out of me.

Run of the mill celebrity weirdness does not bother me - I am capable of ignoring quite a bit of their nonsense, in fact. But Mel? Mel takes it to a whole new level, and in a very public and a very bigoted and hateful way.

Not knowing and doing nothing is not the same as knowing and doing nothing. I mean, you can't very well boycott an actor for doing something you don't know he's done.

Yeah...that is kinda what I think too. And hey...at least the rest of these unnamed 'thousands' have the good sense to keep their hatred to themselves, instead of repeatedly making it so public. Either Mel is so out of control that he is incapable of regulating himself at all...or he is so incredibly stupid as to think he would be forgiven for this stuff over and over and OVER.

Either way, I want no part of him. :)

It's always fun to see how people comment on celebrity's private affairs, and for instance make remote psychological evaluations about someone they only know from movies and the tabloids.

And I know about Mel because Mel himself has made his hateful persona virtually IMPOSSIBLE to ignore

Well it's not like he comes to your door and yells at you. It's interesting how you think you can't ignore him. Just stop reading news related to him. ;)

or he is so incredibly stupid as to think he would be forgiven for this stuff over and over and OVER.
Who shall forgive him? The public? The media? You? Don't you think he couldn't care less about that?

Either way, I want no part of him.
Well, as said above, I don't think Mel cares. ;)

It's also always fun to watch other people do the exact same thing only trying to pretend they're not. Mel's actions and attitude are hard to take into context given what little we know of the reality behind them but if all we have is this, how else are we to gauge what is going on?

Do we even need to gauge what's going on? Why can't we just let them live their private lives?

Gibson, Sheen, Lohan, Hasselhoff, Bale, Spears, etc... the media is constantly monitoring every second of those people's lives waiting for a scandal to happen. And millions of people absorb the tabloids, and then brag about how horrible and how annoying they think they are. But actually it's none of their business.

It's our business if we want to make it our business.

It's our business if we want to make it our business.

Oh, the arrogance.
Look we're free to discuss whoever we like.

You said why don't we just let them live their lives. Our discussions here cannot affect them in any way..and besides, you said Mel wouldn't care.

About you personally? No. About the media that's a pain in the ass? Yes. And since the tabloids also follow the rule of supply and demand, it is INDEED you, me and everyone else that is NOT letting them live their normal lives.

Do we even need to gauge what's going on? Why can't we just let them live their private lives?

There's a difference (a rather obvious one) between "can't... let them live their private lives" and "choose to refuse their product based on something said/done in public."
