Mega Man: TOS

It wasn't so much Wily's Castle that was hard, but Wily himself. That last form with those homing energy balls is just ... wow. I don't know how you're supposed to beat that.

It took me several tries, and it's a beast, but it's not bad once you figure it out. It's been awhile, but I remember that I used the galaxy power to suck up his attacks and maybe two other powers for the actual attacks. I was also pretty well stocked on E tanks.

Yeah, but E tanks are so cheap. I want to beat Wily with just my health bar and preferably just the Mega Buster too. None of his attacks are random, so it is technically possible. It's on my list of things to do right behind beating Battletoads.

I gave Mega Man 9 another go tonight. I have Tornado Man, Magma Man, and Splash Women left. And boy howdy, I couldn't even make it to any of those bosses. The stages are just really unforgiving.

I remember when Mega Man 9 was coming out. A friend of mine at the time said, "Well, I hope it's not as hard as Mega Man 2?"

I said, "...Mega Man 2? Are we talking about the same Mega Man game that I once beat without a single death?"

The fact of the matter was, Mega Man 2 (unbelievably overrated game, by the way) was not difficult in the slightest. And I'm basing that on the notion that I have played through it countless times, but that I can remember the first time I played it. I was six or seven. There were only four or five Mega Man games. It wasn't even hard then.

Mega Man 9, on the other hand was an exercise in futility. I didn't go into the game with the attitude that I could easily take it down, but, man..

Hell I remember getting Mega Man 3 for Christmas when it first came out (it was my first Mega Man game) and I had already beaten half of the robot masters on that day.

I think one of the things that really tries my patience on Mega Man 9 (aside from the stage design) is the removal of the Mega Buster and slide. You never realize how much you depend on those until you no longer have them. I mean I understand they wanted to go old school with this Mega Man, but I never felt either of those additions made the games easier.

I'd classify Mega Man 2 overall as being more 'frustrating' than challenging/hard, since the only real truly difficult part of the game that I've found is the dragon boss in the first level of Wily's castle.

Speaking of Mega Man 2, I'm wondering who everyone's favorite Robot Master or Robot Masters from that game is/are (you can also apply this question to the other games).

My favorite Mega Man 2 Robot Masters are Metal Man and Crash Man; I love their weaponry and the way that they look, while my favorites from the other games are as follows:
Mega Man - Cut Man
Mega Man 3 - Top Man, Hard Man, and Shadow Man
Mega Man 4 - Skull Man and Pharoah Man
Mega Man 5 - Gravity Man and Charge Man
Mega Man 6 - Centaur Man
Mega Man 7 - Shade Man
Mega Man 8 - Clown Man, Astro Man, and Tengu Man

Really? I find him to be one of the easier fortress bosses from all Mega Man games. A few shots from Heat Man's weapon will do him in.

Staying with Mega Man 2, I really hate those cannons that are protected by those walls that can only be destroyed by the crash bombs. Blow up the wrong wall and you're essentially stuck in that bosses room till you get done in.

^ This. I've played Mega Man 2 countless times and have it down cold, but this boss battle still makes me nervous. You have just enough crash bombs to take them all out, but not to take out every single wall. Items 1 and 3 need to be rotated. If you fire a Crash Bomb and it misses, then you're out of luck. You cannot waste any ammo in that fight.

Found this on IGN today.

I'm in complete agreement with the majority of that article, but the one thing I disagree on is the assertion that MM3 is more difficult than MM2. Having played both games multiple times, I personally find MM3 to be much easier than MM2 because it isn't nearly as frustrating. There are certainly parts in MM3 that pose a challenge, but it Is much easier to navigate those stretches of the game than their equivalents in MM2 due to the tools you have at your disposal.

I also wanted to touch on the article's comments concerning MM2's Robot Masters and their popularity in comparison to their MM3 counterparts. While it is true that some of MM2"s Robot Masters are more popular than their MM3 counterparts, it is my personal feeling that, overall, MM3 has a much stronger cast of bosses/Robot Masters than MM2, which is one of the many reasons it has a spot in my 'Top 3 Favorite MM games' while MM2 does not.

Even though (as I said above) MM3 was my first Mega Man game, I've always liked part 2 better. I think the robot masters have more personality, and to me that makes them more memorable.

I just thought of a neat way to shake up my own most recent play-through of the games that are available on the MM Anniversary Collection, which is to defeat half of the Robot Masters in each game using the Arm Cannon/Mega Buster only, and the other half of the Robot Masters in each game using their respective 'weakness weapon'. I was able to come up with the following 'boss order' lists using this formula, and thought I'd share them to get people's thoughts on them:

Mega Man
Bomb Man > Cut Man > Fire Man > Guts Man (Hyper Bomb) > Elec Man (Rolling Cutter) > Ice Man (Thunder Beam)

Mega Man 2
Air Man > Metal Man > Flash Man > Bubble Man > Quick Man (Time Stopper) > Heat Man (Bubble Lead) > Wood Man (Atomic Fire) > Crash Man (Air Shooter)

Mega Man 3
Hard Man > Magnet Man > Top Man > Snake Man > Gemini Man (Search Snake) > Needle Man (Gemini Laser) > > Shadow Man (Top Spin) > Spark Man (Shadow Blade)

Mega Man 4
Toad Man > Skull Man > Bright Man > Drill Man > Dive Man (Skull Barrier) > Pharoah Man (Flash Stopper) > Ring Man (Pharoah Shot) > Dust Man (Ring Boomerang)

Mega Man 5
Gravity Man > Wave Man > Charge Man > Star Man > Gyro Man (Gravity Hold) > Crystal Man (Gyro Attack) > Napalm Man (Grystal Eye) > Stone Man (Napalm Bomb)

Mega Man 6
Plant Man > Wind Man > Knight Man > Tomahawk Man > Yamato Man (Silver Tomahawk) > Flame Man (Wind Storm) > Blizzard Man (Flame Blast) > Centaur Man (Knight Crush)

Mega Man 7
Freeze Man > Cloud Man > Burst Man > Junk Man > Slash Man (Freeze Cracker) > Spring Man (Slash Claw) > Shade Man (Wild Coil) > Turbo Man (Noise Crush)

Mega Man 8
Tengu Man > Clown Man > Frost Man > Grenade Man (Thunder Claw) > Aqua Man > Sword Man (Water Baloon) > Search Man (Flame Sword) > Astro Man (Homing Sniper)

Just beat them all with only the Mega Buster. It's challenging, but definitely doable.

Played some of the original Mega Man just now. It really is surprisingly easy, I blew through four of the six robot masters in no time. The only things that caused me trouble was the beginning of Guts Man's stage where you have to jump on those platforms that periodically drop, and Elec Man. Oh man Elec Man, he's a little bitch, his Elec Beam is one of the most overpowered weapons (for him at least) in the game.

I completed Mega Man 9 and 10 the other night. I still hate 9 forever. The difficulty just boggles me. My roommate said that if that came out when I was younger, along with the rest of the 8-bit Mega Man titles, I would have blown through it without a hitch. I don't believe that would be the case. Wouldn't have come anywhere close to beating it back then.

Mega Man 10. While a tad easier, I completed it on both Easy and Normal mode. I tried Hard Mode. One thing is absolutely certain about Hard Mode; it's designed to make you fail.

I went and picked up the Mega Man X Collection compilation, and have to say that, aside from the first and second games, I'm really not feeling the same 'fun factor' that I do with regards to the classic Mega Man games, which is kind of disappointing. I don't regret buying the collection in the least, but had expectations that I was going to enjoy playing the X games more than I have. I do have to give props to the first X game, though, for being just as good as - if not better than - the best games in the classic series, and for having robot master bosses that are cooler than any of their 'classic game' equivalents/counterparts.

Recently played through Mega Man 2 again for old time's sake. God damn, that game is just a masterpiece. It was a little harder than I remember, but that's probably because I'm not a Coca-Cola addled 11 year old anymore. Platforming is definitely a gaming muscle I don't flex too much anymore. That probably contributed to my difficulty too. Still beat it though!

I loved the hell out of the first one when it came out. Even bought it. Never really got into the second one, have never played part 3. But I love the hell out of X4, it was one of the first games I got for my PSX, and I just had a blast with it. The series kind of lost me with X5 though, that game was just a crushing disappointment to me.

I think what disappoints me the most about X3-X6 is that I really wanted to play as Zero, but the developers sort of handicapped the player's ability to do so (especially in X4 and X5, when you're stuck using a sword -a limited-range melee weapon - to take out enemies (if they were going to make Zero use a sword, they should've really increased his durability).

Tying this discussion of the X series back into the topic at hand, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the story connections between the two series are beyond what's put forth/explained in the intro to MMX1 (yes, I could probably find out this info on my own, but feel bad derailing the thread with my X series talk, and wanted to make it relevant to the actual topic of the thread).
