Mega Man: TOS

Anyone else on the boards a fan of the original Mega Man series? I can tell you, I've been a huge one since the early 1990s.

Last weekend, I tracked down a copy of Mega Man: The Wily Wars, which is a 16-bit upgrade of the first three games in the original NES series for the Sega Genesis, so in a sense, I've been rediscovering the games. I'm pretty sure I haven't played a single video game series more than I have this one. Those original six for the Nintendo Entertainment System are just classic and still insanely fun.

I didn't care much for MM7 on the SNES. MM8 on the PS One was an improvement, but something was missing. It just didn't really have the spirit. MM9 and 10 brought the series back to its roots. I realized that NES-style graphics and gameplay are really where I want the originals to stay.

MM9 was easily one of the most frustrating video game experiences I ever had. It was shocking to discover how hard the game was. I mean, the originals weren't exactly a walk in the park -- especially 5 and 6. They were challenging at best, but not HARD. Mega Man 9 was HARD and unrelenting in its difficulty. I fell for every trap that was set.

MM10 wasn't as bad in the difficulty department, but still a challenge none the less. I still don't even think I finished it!

Do we have any other fans?

One of my favorite game series. I like all of the so called "classic series" games. Mega Man and Bass was the weakest, And I agree that the NES titles were the best. 9 and 10 were fantastic as well. It was so cool to finally play as Protoman.

I liked the X series, but I felt it wasn't nearly as much fun. The cartoon was dreck. I'd love to see another attempt, maybe with animation like MM8 (with better voice acting).

I played the first 3 on the NES back in the 80s/90s but never really returned to the series. Didn't seem like there was that much there. But I did really enjoy those first 3 back in the day.

I'm mostly a retro gamer these days, so the NES Mega Man series ranks among my favourite games of all time. I've played played through Mega Man 2 at least a dozen times by now. The later Mega Man games (7-9) were pretty good, but something that I can't quite place my finger on was missing from them.

If you enjoyed the Mega Man games you should check out Darkwing Duck for the NES. It's made by Capcom and it uses the same game engine from Mega Man. For all intents and purposes it is a Mega Man game with a Darkwing Duck skin.

All of the Capcom Disney cartoon games for the NES that I can think of are great. Duck Tales, Chip & Dale, DWD, Tale Spin...

I love the Mega Man games, at least the first 6 on the NES. MMX2 was good too. Haven't really played much of the other, newer ones.

^ Yeah, I began to lose track once they started giving Mega Man the Street Fighter II treatment. Let's see there's the TOS, X, Zero, ZX, Star Force, Battle Network, Xtreme, and Legends series. Not to mention all the spinoffs. TOS, X, and Legends are the only ones I care about.

Mega Man is one of my favorite video game characters of all time, and the original Mega Man series is one of my favorite video game franchises of all time, with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th installments in the series being my favorites, even though I enjoy all of the games in the main series (the ones that I've played, anyway) for various reasons. I haven't had a whole lot of experience with the X series, although I do have to say that I really enjoyed that series' RPG installment, Mega Man X: Command Mission, even though I haven't actually made it very far into the game.

The original series is the one for me. Mega Man and The Legend of Zelda are the two video game series I can revisit and play through them like it's my first time. I never tire of them.

I fell out of the Mega Man X series while playing through X6. Many didn't seem like to like X5, but I liked it just fine -- some felt the series started waning at that point. For me, X6 was a frustrating experience. I never finished it and just tossed it aside and decided the X series was over for me.

The other series: Zero, ZX, Battle Network, Star Force, are just Mega Man In Name Only.

I was on the verge of starting a thread like this, lol!

I've been playing the shit out of the Mega Man Anniversary Collection for Xbox lately. I love being able to jump in and out of games at will. I attempt a level here....can't beat it? I'll go to another Mega Man game and work on the levels there. The best part is that it also includes both of the (extremely rare) Mega Man arcade games, if I want to chill for a bit and just blast robots I'll jump into one of those games.

Along with the anniversary collection I have Mega Man 9...havent gotten part 10 yet though.

Not as hard as it's made out to be. It's just more difficult because of the spike placement in each level, you really have to stay on your toes. However I'm stuck on Splash Woman's stage because of that stupid area where you have to jump on the platforms that rapidly deteriorate over time. I know once I get to her I can beat her, but getting there is the problem.

I thought Wily's castle was hard, with protoman even more so, but a skilled player shouldn't have too much trouble.

I think 9 has the greatest weapon set of any mega man game.

It wasn't so much Wily's Castle that was hard, but Wily himself. That last form with those homing energy balls is just ... wow. I don't know how you're supposed to beat that.

It took me several tries, and it's a beast, but it's not bad once you figure it out. It's been awhile, but I remember that I used the galaxy power to suck up his attacks and maybe two other powers for the actual attacks. I was also pretty well stocked on E tanks.

I'm okay with the traditional mega man challange, I just wish you could save in the middle of a castle. So annoying.

The worst part of 9 and I know you guys will know exactly the part I'm talking about, is further into Wily's stage where you have to ascend around entire area of spikes. The way you have to maneuver around them is to shoot your arm canon in either direction to move while dodging enemies in the process.

On the last screen of the ascent you have to move all the way right and you have to do it very quickly. Then you have to rapidly move to the left to reach the ladder to climb up. But, if you overshoot the ladder and hit the edge of the screen, a friendly little robot comes down from above, grabs you, and whips you into the spikes, forcing you to do the entire thing all over.

That was the absolute worst. I fell for that and every other trap they set every single time. I mean, over the years, I never found the original Mega Man game to be HARD. Challenging, but not HARD. This game is unforgivable.

I've made it to Wily, but the problem is, my weapon energy is completely depleted when I reach the end, so there's nearly nothing I can do.

Mega Man 10 is difficult at times, but it's not as bad as 9 is. I mean, there's a difference between challenging and out right frustration. Mega Man 9 is one frustrating game.

I know exactly which part you are talking about. The first time I saw that, my mouth went wide open. There a lot of suprise deaths like that in the game that pretty much will kill you on your first attempt, because you don't them coming.

Overall though I was very impressed with the level design. They actually made you use your powers to get through the level. In the old games I just used the mega buster 90% of the time.

The classic MM games were good for what they were, but every other main timeline series (X, Zero, ZX) gets progressively better. So it makes me sad that they've fallen back on nostalgia instead of pushing further ahead.
