Maximum speed of the NuEnterprise

Apparently Dennis' modus operandi is to occasionally show up and post the same old rhetoric in certain threads, ignoring that he posted the exact same thing on one of the earliest pages and that the discussion about ship speed has long since passed. Nice work!

It was true twenty-odd pages ago; it's just as true now. All of the obsessive back-and-forth about meaningless trivia hasn't moved the ball an inch. ;)

Apparently your modus operandi is to monitor other posters. When you're a moderator, get in touch.

I was just pointing out something I found funny, that's all. If you want to make it into something more, be my guest.

I take it some here are not familiar with fannish terminology?
"Mundanes" has a number of different connotations, several of which are--to one degree or another--uncomplimentary. Which put-down was it you had in mind, Captain?

Non-fans, ones who don't know "come here" from "sic 'em" when it comes to science fiction and Star Trek. For some reason, certain of our number seem obsessed with seeking the approval of these ignorant folks, like it's somehow validating that they appear to like this heavily diluted version of Star Trek.

To paraphrase Captain Picard, if Star Trek is to be appreciated, let it be appreciated for what it really is, not this watered-down-for-the-general-audience mishmash.

I'm perfectly happy with Trek keeping its appeal to so-called "mundanes" as long as it means the franchise continues to produce new installments. You can only watch the entire run of TOS so many times before you start to wish for something new.

So basically, you're saying that you're happy with whatever they throw at you as long as it has "Star Trek" stamped on it? I disagree. I've watched every single episode of TOS countless times and I never get tired of it. As for STXI, I was tired of that imitation Star Trek fluff as soon as the end credits rolled.

The coinage and continued use of the term "mundanes" is itself a commentary on certain aspects of fannish mentality, not unlike the use of "normies" or "Earth people" by recovering drug addicts to describe the unaddicted - it's an attempt at morale-building group self-identification among the suffering.

No. I'm happy with what they throw at me as long as it keeps the franchise alive, profitable, and popular. Because as much as I fucking HATED Voyager, if it had been the highest rated TV show in the air during its run, I would have simply grit my teeth and enjoyed the windfall of new trekkies, new trek merchandize and occasionally watchable Voyager episode while waiting to produce something that I wouldn't hate as much.

It's sort of like my relationship with the entire Stargate franchise. I haven't liked ANYTHING involving Stargate since halfway through the first episode of SG-1. In the broader sense, however, it raises the profile of science fiction as a respectable genre since it has more mass appeal; the more people watch Stargate and find out sci-fi can be fun, the more of them (eventually) find their way to Star Trek. Granted, that's cross-franchise tolerance, but if you think about it, the reboot is as much a continuation of the old Trek line as it is a successor to it and therefore a separate continuity altogether.

Now, the main fundamental difference between you and me is this: I hated Voyager. I hate and still hate Stargate and its various spinoffs (and my eyes are still burning from watching SGU for the first time). You will not, however, see me trolling the Voyager forums arguing with Voyager fans about how much Voyager sucks. You will also not see me in the Stargate forum any time soon, barking at Gatepeople how much that show they enjoy is a vacuous cookie cutter wannabe space opera with a cheese factor so high it makes Flash Gordon look like Lord of the Rings.

Which basically leaves us with the question: if you hated the movie that much, what the hell are you even doing here?

I disagree. I've watched every single episode of TOS countless times and I never get tired of it.
Which forces me to repeat the question: if TOS is enough for you, why do you even care? Go back and watch your TOS reruns and pretend the whole thing never happened like I (and the rest of the sane human race) do with Voyager.

See, I generally enjoy a lot of sci fi on a superficial level but I'm not often overly impressed. I like Stargate but I would hesitate to say I'm a fan. On some levels SGU is my favourite so far because the characters are less cartoony and the science is generally 'basic' real science. Firefly was a gem but it was only half way through the season that it had really grown on me. B5 was a flawed masterpiece. NuBSG was great at misdirection and keeping you out of your comfort zone. I love some of the early TOS and a few gems throughout the show's run but lets be honest, much of it is camp dross that was great when viewed as a product of its time but by today's standards many elements are quite poor. The early TNG shows look pretty lame today too.

Out of interest, which sci fi shows more generally do you view as worthy of praise?

So, as long as it has "Star Trek" stamped on it, you'll be perfectly happy with it as long as it's popular? Even if it's utter watered-down, diluted for the "mainstream" audience, imitation Star Trek for the masses, crap? Okay. Glad we cleared that up.

Which basically leaves us with the question: if you hated the movie that much, what the hell are you even doing here?

Like I've said many, many, many, many times before, I didn't hate the movie. I rather enjoyed it. It was a fun, fast-paced, sci-fi summer popcorn flick. But that was it. The movie itself isn't what bothered me. That JJA and his so-called "Trek fan" writers totally disregarded the past 40+ years of established Star Trek history and basically redesigned the entire Star Trek universe is what bothered me. AbramsTrek is not my Star Trek. And they went to great lengths to let everybody know that. "Forget what you know". "This ain't your father's Star Trek." Remember those?

And besides, this is a discussion forum. It's not set up just so the gushers can come in and worship at the altar of JJ Abrams and his new version of Star Trek. This is a place for all opinions to be aired out. Just because I don't share your love for STXI doesn't mean that I don't have a right to be here and voice my opinion just as you do.

Which forces me to repeat the question: if TOS is enough for you, why do you even care? Go back and watch your TOS reruns and pretend the whole thing never happened like I (and the rest of the sane human race) do with Voyager.

See above.

40 years of established history ,what's wrong with reimagining something sure. I love the prime universe just as much as JJ Abramsverse.

You mean "Wrath of Khan?" Yeah, I'm okay with that.

AbramsTrek is not my Star Trek.
Obviously. If you can't handle that, you should probably go back to YOUR Star Trek and stop complaining about the new stuff.

Yes, a discussion forum. Not a whambulance for people who are angry because they didn't get what they wanted for Trekmas.
