MATT SMITH is ready to quit Doctor Who to make it in Hollywood

^I wish you two would just fuck off and get it over with...

Fixed.

Um, I'm joking. Haha, look at the joke :D :D :D

I'm a little late to the party, but after being constantly told to knock it off with the threadshitting, saying "why don't you two fuck off" and trying to brush it off by adding that it's a joke doesn't fly anymore. Infraction for trolling. See you in 24 hours; as always, comments to PM.

Tennant's accent needs work, but I don't know if I would have noticed it if I weren't already familiar with his cadences in his natural Scottish accent and in his affected English accent. It's interesting, though -- his voice in an American Standard accent sounds very different than in an English or Scottish one, somehow much higher-pitched.

British voices often get higher pitched when they adopt American accents. Listen to Daniel Craig in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. (That's a perfect American accent, BTW. Granted, this was before I knew who Daniel Craig was, but I had no idea that he wasn't American. He not only pulls off the accent, he can also act in it.)

That's only two examples. I can think of a lot more who don't pitch their voices higher to do an American accent. Idris Elba, Hugh Laurie, Jamie Bamber, Dominic West, Chewitel Ejiofor and Damian Lewis to name a few.

It usually depends on which American accent they are affecting. Australians almost always get deeper, same with Irish. Some of the sounds of various dialects just lend themselves to a more (or less) high pitched or nasal sound and require more deliberate control to make them sound deeper (or higher)

I like Matt but he doesn't really seem like he'd have typical Hollywood appeal.

Oh my, that's awful. Not only is the accent bad but somehow it makes him sound like a total dweeb as well.

Blah, I hardly knew who that was at first. Now I know what people in the UK must think when Americans try and fail to do accents.

I hope he finds something else in Hollywood. And I hope they tell him to use his normal accent.

well finally remembered to watch this and, have to say, I don't think it's that bad. But then I am saying that as a Brit

What's bad is that they've taken a man with bundles of energy and natural charisma and turned him into just another man in a shirt and tie in American tv show!

Just for once it'd be nice to have a British actor who didn't feel the need to 'crack' America.

The accent wasn't horrible, just all over the place. In the same sentence he sounded like he was from Chicago, then Los Angeles, then Toronto.

But you hit the nail on the head in saying they totally neutered his natural acting energy. Not that he has to be a zany, madcap lawyer, mind you, but his performance was watered down to the point of being nearly passionless.

Yeah, you're right, I stepped over the line there. It was intended as banter rather than maliciously (I mean, haha, fancy wanting prancing Tennant back now we've finally got the actual character of the Doctor back, aha, gerroutofit), but it wasn't clever and - worse still - it wasn't funny. I'd like to apologise for any offense caused.

So yeah, Tennant's Rex accent. Bloody awful. He ought to get a part using his normal accent. Besides, Americans like unusual accents don't they?

I dunno, they complain a lot about not being able to understand regional accents from the UK.

If they can understand Groundskeeper Willie, they can understand Tennant. Could explain why Ant & Dec have never broken into the US though (that or because they're rubbish).
