MATT SMITH is ready to quit Doctor Who to make it in Hollywood

I like Matt but he doesn't really seem like he'd have typical Hollywood appeal.
He reminds me a lot of Johnny Depp - odd and eccentric but a terrific actor.

Depp's drop-dead sexy. Matt Smith is not. Neither is Tennant or Eccelston, and look at their "Hollywood careers" right now. Hollywood is already swimming in actors with extraordinary talent and ordinary looks who can't get jobs. Smith would be a fool to try to compete in that market.

In all the interviews with Smith, he seems more than pleased to be the Doctor, and likes the role.

Yeah. But then, I expected that a devoted fanboy like Tennant would try to break Tom Baker's record. Instead, he clocked in at a tenuous 3rd place, below Jon Pertwee but only barely above Hartnell, Troughton, Davison, & McCoy.

Yeah, but he left before he got burned out and was just phoning it in. Which is better, really, in the long run.

Drop-dead sexy is a matter of personal taste. Judging by the comments I've read around the internet there are plenty of women (and men!) who find Matt Smith drop-dead sexy.

Anyway, I hope he stays put for quite some time. Most of the stuff Hollywood churns out is junk. Doctor Who is about all I watch these days.

Actors don't necessarily move on because they think they're going to get a better gig. Often, they move on out of a combination of wanting to avoid burning out and to attempt to take on new challenges, with no particular expectation of success or failure one way or the other.

I hope Smith stays on for longer than three seasons, but even if he doesn't, I would presume that it's just grass-is-greener-ism.

As for the Rex thing -

Tennant's accent needs work, but I don't know if I would have noticed it if I weren't already familiar with his cadences in his natural Scottish accent and in his affected English accent. It's interesting, though -- his voice in an American Standard accent sounds very different than in an English or Scottish one, somehow much higher-pitched.

I wasn't aware of any women drooling over Matt Smith. I know quite a few who thought that Tennant was quite the heartthrob. Eccleston I think is a perfect example of "sexy ugly."

Agreed. I don't watch any current scripted American TV anymore except for Saturday Night Live. Doctor Who is very much dominating my life. (My friend recently had a Doctor Who theme for his 30th birthday party. There were photos of all the Doctors on the tables. Plastic cups had been converted into Dalek centerpieces. We played Doctor Who themed charades. And the cake was frosted to look like the Van Gogh painting from "The Pandorica Opens.":techman:)

British voices often get higher pitched when they adopt American accents. Listen to Daniel Craig in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. (That's a perfect American accent, BTW. Granted, this was before I knew who Daniel Craig was, but I had no idea that he wasn't American. He not only pulls off the accent, he can also act in it.)

And a bit lower down if you think in terms of stories or episodes rather than years.
Storywise, it'd Tom, Hartnell, Pertwee, Troughton, Davison, McCoy, Colin. Colin and McCoy (just) swap on episodes...
If we try to calculate airtime, my head might explode!

Eccleston took a while to grow on me, but yeah, he definitely has sex appeal. Tennant I found too annoying to be sexy. As for Matt Smith, wow, really? I've been drooling all season! Read some of the comments on youtube for THE shower scene (and you guys think I'm bad!)

Heck, even Alex Kingston thinks he's sexy! And lucky her, she'll probably get to snog him at some point.

I want friends like this. That is awesome!

Matt Smith, the actor, does nothing for me---probably because I'm old enough to be his mother. But I do find him interesting to watch. He's a bit like Tom Baker, in that I find him physically very odd but he has a good presence and his Doctor very appealing.

I'm glad he's going to stay around awhile (despite all the ridiculous rumors). I want to see where his Doctor will go and how he might develop.

The Sun trot this story out every few months. It's just typical for them. I think somewhere I have a cutting from The Sun from a few years ago which said that David Bowie was going to play Davros!

I can only think of 2 or 3 Doctor/companion combinations that lasted more than a couple years: 3rd Doctor/Jo Grant, 4th Doctor/Sarah Jane Smith, & maybe 7th Doctor/Ace.

2nd doctor & Jamie. Also Romana and 4th doc if you count her as a single companion and not as two...

Oh and 5th doc & Tegan, though she left, then immediately changed her mind and returned the very next story...

Hey I'm probably old enough to be Karen's father and that doesn't stop me admiring :)

I really hope this idea of Smith leaving is BS, I've seen as well a lot of Moffatt's only doing two years rumours as well and I similarly hope they're bull too.

If for no other reason than it's hard to see who the nexty show runner would be, and much as I would have pitied the fool who followed Tennant, I now really would pity the guy who had to play 12.

That said I wouldn't want Smith to hang around as long as Tom, he was the Doctor too long. 3 or 4 years is optimum for a Doctor I think.

I am only a good 11 years older then Karen, and Boy I would like to do more then admire her.... Naughty thoughts aside, I am thinking hot tub, sweet wine, and Jammy Dodgers!:techman:

here, here.. I too hope this is only a rumour, and I love the direction, writing and presence the Moff and Smith bring to the show.. they add weight and dimension to the character, that wasn't exactly lacking in the Tennant and Eccleston years, but wasn't prominent either..Smith puts the scif fi back and pulls out some of the overly done emotional doctor trauma.. though you could examine the 9th and 10th doctor from a psychological profile on healing and loss..(which explains the shouting)

I agree, though some part of me wishes the gentleman who played in "the next doctor" would have been saved for 12.. he was brilliant and would have been brilliant as the 12th Doc!

see here I disagree, I would have preferred Tennant hang around for another 3 seasons.. I think that 6 seasons of a doctor is perfect, though I am coming from the American Perspective where it's like 10 years of a character is appropriate for great successful seasons..though if you take the 10 and do an average of the popularity of the character, and fan interest and ratings, you come out somewhere at 6 years as optimal, I read an article on this subject some nights ago..

anyhow, I think that if we get Matt for the 3 years mandatory and he opts in for the other 2, that would be fantastic! Add in 1 more year to tie up any loose ends, and such, and give Moff his dream projects and what ever, a few more specials, And we would probably have a magnificent Who season to rival all others..

Then I would love to see that repeated for another 2 more docs..13 is going to be a doosey since he is the last regen..(I wonder how they will give him more regens, or if the series finally dies by then??)

Well, I'm old enough to be Smith's mother too, and in general I'm not attracted to guys that age. But he is definitely the exception. And yeah, men drool over much younger women all the time, so I don't feel all that bad about it.

Don't worry, both rumors are BS. Moffatt himself responded to that rumor and said he had no plans to leave. He is in his dream job.

Yeah, he'd have to be pretty spectacular. If Smith had followed Eccleston I wouldn't have been in mourning for the past 4 years!

Have you had Dak on ignore for the last year? :guffaw:
I know, huh? Maybe I didn't use enough of the droolie smilies to catch his attention?
