Mass Effect: ANDROMEDA

I was just hoping they'd throw us a bone. ;)

oh right, he says bang, not bone. my brilliant joke is ruined, thanks Obama :(

And I guess the reason you want to see combat is that you're not sure how it's going to work? ;)

Click -> Shoot.

Not combat. Gameplay mechanics. You know, because it's a game?
So far each instalment has built on and significantly altered the levelling system, how weapon & gear upgrades are acquired and managed, the role (if any) vehicles play in exploration and how the missions are structured. They also almost completely overhauled the class system between ME1 to ME2.
The only real mechanic in the dialogue system is the paragon/renegade meter, which they've reportedly ditched.

Don't get me wrong, I get as engaged with the character interactions as any Mass Effect fan and would love to know they've made the choices have more impact. I just don't need to see that in the trailers as I'd rather discover it in the game. Plus, as I' already said, we've seen it already to a certain extent. We know it's there, that's enough for now I think.

In all honesty I was hoping for them to focus on dialog and characters because one of the biggest criticisms of Mass Effect 3 was that the dialogs often didn't have proper consequences and unlike previous games there wasn't always actual different options.
I know it's hard to properly show that in trailers, I was just hoping they'd throw us a bone. ;)

Considering showing that stuff is inherently spoilery, especially since we currently know nothing about the plot and are only starting to really learn about the setting, I can't see how they'd do that. We may see a little of it in a gameplay video or pre-release twitch stream down the line, but not in a flashy N7 Day marketing blitz.

This is interesting. Apparently they've done away with the old class system and if I'm interpreting this righ, instead gives you the freedom to build your own class. I suspect this has grown out of their experiments with all the crazy hybrid class builds in ME3MP. Indeed it's something I saw requested a lot in the old MP forums at the time.

No doubt there will be certain optimal builds that fall close enough to the old classes, but it's nice to have the option to pick and choose certain abilities. Tactical Cloak + Adrenaline Rush + Annihilation Field + Biotic Throw = invisible bullet-time biotic wrecking ball? Yes please! ;)

There's also this. Good to know they're not starting the new trilogy, but seemingly switching to Dragon Age's "one hero per game" approach. Indeed everything I've seen makes it look like they're treating this as a soft reboot of the entire franchise.

Finally got a look at gameplay and aside from facial animations on Sara needing a little work, I think it looks pretty damn good!

Second briefing went up. Gotta admit, the Nexus is growing on me.

So I've always been a big fan of the technology depicted in the Mass Effect series and Andromeda looks to continue that trend with me.

I think they've done a pretty good job explaining how they got there with the ODSY Drive. I always figured the key was to find a way to use the static discharge as an advantage and I'm happy to see they've crossed that hurdle.

The Arks themselves aren't as big as most usually guessed, being mentioned as "over 1.5 km long". I remember more then a few people having issues with the concept the the Citadel races building massive ships when the Crucible was such a tremendous undertaking partly due to its size. So the Arks coming in as smaller then the Destiny Ascension, Collector Cruiser, or a Reaper is a welcome sight.

The Nexus on the other hand is huge but I'm glad to see it actually has to finish being built after arriving in Andromeda as I imagine the part that makes the actual journey is much more of a shell or empty framework. For all we know it arrives years before the Arks and has more then enough to build itself up using the automated construction robots we saw at the enemy camp in the gameplay trailer.

The Tempest and Nomad might be my favorite addition to the series. I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed the Mako so returning to vehicle based land transportation is a welcomed addition to the game. Plus from what we know of the game it sounds like it will be alot of fun. The Tempest though is the real beauty here. Really a great looking ship that just screams "Mass Effect" every time I see it. I honestly can't wait to explore the ship and make it feel as much a home as the Normandy felt. I appreciate that it's a smaller ship as it's only supposed to be some kind of scout ship as opposed to a military frigate but I think its size will lend itself well to the story we are being presented.

So yeah. Any other thoughts and opinions on Andromeda after a pretty solid month of info being dropped on us?

I take it this is something you have to sign up in order to see? If so, would you mind doing a little copy-paste?

Edit: never mind. Found it. That website isn't the easiest to navigate on mobile.

I expected them to ignore this subject completely, to be honest.

I also see we have our first look at a female krogan without that burka thing. Seems the males of the species are the pretty ones.

We're expecting our first born around the end of april so hopfully I get a good solid month to throw myself into Andromeda before life takes over. I want Bioware to take as long as they need, but boy am I glad it seems like it's not getting delayed any further.

Bit more gameplay, and a look at some of the character menus...

Still doesn't quite feel like Mass Effect to me - not sure what it is. The combat feels a little hectic and less tactical, for one.
