Masks: why the hate?

I actually get that point of view, even if I don't share it. Fistful isn't meant to be taken too seriously. It's just a bit of nonsense fun, like Rascals

"Rascals" was probably slated like it was to accomodate Patrick Stewart prepping to direct "A Fistful of Datas".

Frankly, "Rascals" was just nonsense. But I will credit it for casting the kid versions of the characters well.

"Sometimes #1, you just have to... Bow to the absurd"

You really do have to hold some episodes under different scrutiny than others, when they're clearly meant as comedy, & general light fare imho

Hope it's okay that I'm replying in this thread this late:

I love it. It’s my third favorite TNG episode. It’s massively weird, and I love weird. Plus, the Korgano mask looks adorable on Jean-Luc.

I'm glad you mentioned this. For some reason seeing Picard wearing the Korgano mask kind of reminds me of Batman.

Now... with that out of the way to reply to the general thread, I'm actually one of the few who liked "Masks". The only thing I DON'T like about it is the fact that I've seen the episode so many times. I liked the how the emergency lights give the ship interiors that dark, hellish glow and how Data's Ihat persona viewed Troi as Masaka.

Actually, now that I think about it and that scene. I'm thinking MAYBE the episode would've benefited better if both Data and Troi were both possessed except Troi embodied the Masaka persona and she had on the Masaka mask sitting on the throne and Picard, wearing the Korgano mask, would've been putting Troi/Masaka to sleep to reverse everything back to normal.

Interesting, how perspectives on episodes differ, just like perspectives on series.

I didn't think much of "Rascals", for a number of reasons: for one thing, it's like "Unnatural Selection" in that it makes people theoretically immortal (getting old? Just zap yourself back to age 12). Picard basically gets bullied out of the captain's chair. And, the Ferengi taking the Enterprise was just sad.

"Fistful of Datas" had cute moments, though it's not a favorite. Though the Enterprise flying into the sunset was an inspired move.
