Marvel/Netflix Daredevil Season 1

I'm actually liking how they're keeping the connections of the rest of the MCU at arms length. For example, there's mention of the Battle of New York but only so far as it's effected local property value.

I keep expecting to see Stark/Avengers Tower in the background or some establishing shot, but I haven't see it so far. Not that I know anything about NY's geography outside of what I've seen in movies, but I'm pretty sure Midtown high rises should be visible from Hell's Kitchen.

Finished!

I saw her use Tai Chi to lay out Daredevil. Not to mention that crack about knowing all languages. And the Word "Dragon" exploded in my head. Makluan dragons from Iron Man came to mind first, which is a distraction, since the TV show is not going to Connect to the movies so directly... Iron Fist gets his power from hugging it out with a dragon, and Iron Fist is all about focussing his Chi, and Tai Chi is about Chi... Although that remark as she ditched New York, that her home was much further away than China could have been a reference to K'un-lun... They also said that her heroin was too pure. Space Heroin? That's L Ron Hubbard which completely opens a different can of worms.

Definitely an alien, possibly a dragon?

You may be on to something.

I was wondering if the symbol on the heroin was something we knew about.

I was dreading that it might be more Kree, or possibly Kryptonian.

Just watched episode 1.

Underwhelmed. The guy that plays Hoppy or Bunny or Foggy or whatever the partner's name was.. well he was awful. Makes me appreciate the splendid acting of Donal Logue in Gotham even more. The hero was as bland here as Affleck's version of him. The show's use of confession for exposition dumps is inexcusable.

Most people called Foggy are not dynamic.

Some people called Foggy have a proud reefer habit.

This Foggy does not.

And I'm about six episodes in and so far there's been exactly ONE confession booth scene. So hardly a valid criticism. Also: there's a big difference between an exposition dump and establishing tone and character. That scene told us that our superhero to be is 1) Catholic 2) knows what he's doing is wrong (or at least sinful according to his faith) and 3) he's still going to do it anyway. Not a lot of comic books that have made the transition to the screen deal with their protagonists's faith, so I'm glad they're keeping that in hand while not smacking up over the head with it.

Great cast so far. Not a single weak link as far as I can tell.

FSM, why the fuck are you watching this? You know you're going to hate it just like you hate everything else Marvel studios puts out.

Without reading everyone else's posts for fear of spoilers, I will say that I really liked the first two episodes. They really have done a good job adapting it. I can't wait to watch some more, especially episode 7 based on its title alone.

Someone might have mentioned this - but I think that is Stan Lee on the wall behind the Sgt. Desk...

Because I have Netflix

Umm, so your Netflix account is controlling your brain and forcing you to watch everything on it?

Yes. Didn't you know that when you create a Netflix account they implant in your brain a controlling device? :)

Or are you really believing that all those people see House of Cards because they like it?

give the hints towards the Iron Fist series - I have to wonder in 2015/2016 with two similar series (white guys who are the saviour/Know martial arts) if they shouldn't change the character of Iron Fist to actually be of Asian origins to avoid the orientalism and cultural appropriation that weights the character down.

Seen the first two episodes and liked what I saw. It's pretty much what I hoped Gotham would be like. Great atmosphere, impressive photography, especially the lighting. Solid writing, good cast. It feels grounded, gritty, utterly believable, which is why I found it hard to stomach that it shares the same universe as the Avengers and the silly POS kiddy shows like Agents of SHIELD or Agent Carter. That line in the pilot ("The whole world watched half of NY get destroyed" or something like that) came like a sucker punch, out of nowhere, and it just felt... Wrong.

As far as pilots go.. Gotham, while not perfect, was much better. First, the partner actor Bullock to foggy) is played by a much better actor. Even the main character is better.. McKenzie has a fire to his Gordon, while the guy playing Murdock is both smug and wooden.. not a good combo. The episode ends with his (thankfully silent) resolve to keep fighting crime, while we get a montage of what the criminal underworld is doing. It's telling us that we watched something interesting when we didn't. By contrast, Gotham's pilot took the incorruptible cop and corrupted him by forcing him to make an impossible choice.. one that would affect him for the whole season. He has angst but its not the "should I wear the costume and fight crime" angst that all superheros have in live-action media.

I thought Gotham was shit to be honest - never made it past the first episode plus I'm not sure you can talk about Netflix shows in terms of 'pilots' given their model and what you see in the first episode might have been filmed at any point.

So in terms of what next?

* Karen's past (tied to why she speaks spanish
* Electra
* Matt's mother
* What was Madame Gao actually upto? - likely to be picked up in Iron Fist and her symbol is the same as Steel Serpent
* What were the Yakuza (or were they The Hand?) upto with Black Sky?
* What is the nature of 'The War'?
* Who is Stick talking to?
* Is there something special about Night Nurse's ex who is mentioned - real name of Luke Cage maybe?

Interesting to see how close/different this stuff is to the answers we got in the comics.

I wish I could tell you it gets better, but it doesn't, it's incredibly consistent throughout the season. You COULD get used to it (shit) and enjoy it (shit) for what it is (shit) like the rest of us did. It's your choice.

Yeah, I should have used the term "premiere". Netflix doesn't do pilots, they release entire seasons all at once.

Still if this is the sort of quality that Netflix are providing, really interesting to see what they do with the other series... and hopefully we finally get The Punisher series we need...
