It's a way to basically shield the actual company/investors making the movie from any possible lawsuits against a movie, shield their personal assets or the assets of the company that funds the creation of the movie... and is also sometimes a way to get beneficial tax breaks or funding when they may be formed in a locale that's either beneficial for such things.
