What grade would you give the Marvel Cinematic Universe? (Ever-Changing Question)

The movie could be called Young Avengers for branding purposes without the term being used in-story.

It could be a time travel story where the team finds themselves in the mid to late 19th century American West. Avengers: Young Guns

By Avengers 6, they might phase out Thor and Banner (unless they can get a movie for him)

I don't think it is Disney phasing out its current line-up of Avengers. This issue isn't even how old the actors are. I believe it is more about how long the actors want to keep playing their characters.

Anyway, there's a rumor now that Marvel has changed the title from Young Avengers to Champions to avoid the "they aren't young anymore" nonsense, and that they'll be doing it as a Disney+ series instead of a movie, since the underperformance of The Marvels has made them reconsider whether a movie centering on TV characters can succeed.

This is just a rumor, of course, but I certainly wouldn't mind having a longer-form story to give the characters more to do.

It should definitely be a movie rather than a series. The television budget, which worked great for Agatha, would not be able to support the effects for all the characters.

If they're worried about box office, Thunderbolts might be a good test for that. Also, they could have the team in training with one or two of the popular movie leads. Doctor Strange and Spider-Man would bring in viewers, for example.

It makes sense and what I actually hope they do. But more than 6 freaking episodes. They need to give us at least 10.

I don't think any of them really have that complex of powers, they've already done Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, and Ironheart on the series, and America's powers aren't any worse than theirs.

The Arrowverse was able to do plenty of big superhero action with a relatively tiny budget, though it didn't look particularly photorealistic. I'm sure Disney/Marvel can do plenty of cool stuff with their bigger budget. And as JD said, many of them don't require particularly elaborate VFX for their powers. For a more FX-heavy character like Ms. Marvel or Ironheart, say, the digital assets for creating their FX were already built for their previous series, which should be a budget-saver for Champions.

Besides, all the fancy VFX in the world won't matter if the characters and the emotional engagement aren't there. And with a team of multiple heroes, you can obviously do more character work if you've got 6-8 hours to work with instead of 2 1/2 hours.

And they are forking over crazy amounts of money for the Disney+ streaming series, Season 1 of Andor had budget $250,000,000 and I'm pretty sure the MCU series probably have similar budgets.

For my money, few of the Disney+ MCU shows have delivered on being a proper series, as opposed to being better served by a tighter version of the same story in the form of a movie.

So I guess what I'm saying is, I often prefer a movie but if they can absolutely promise me a well-made show then I'll allow it. ;)

I've loved all of the shows.

...except Secret Invasion. But I think we all agree on that one.

I also at least enjoy if not love all of the films in the post- Endgame era.

Yes, including  Quantumania, Eternals, and Love and Thunder (but I agree that they do have certain issues).

I should clarify, I have actually enjoyed the majority of the MCU shows. But I also think many of them could have benefited from being told in a truncated version.

Haven't they changed that, though? They stopped letting directors approach the shows as if they were mini-movies where they didn't bother to get the plots and scripts settled down before they started filming, and instituted more of a traditional writing-room system with more writing discipline. I've seen Agatha All Along praised for being better structured as a TV series than many of its predecessors.

Same answer. They were like that because they were approached as serialized movies rather than proper TV series. With a series, you aren't as focused on advancing the plot and can take more time to focus on character and interaction -- like Agatha, which gave all its main characters focus episodes and room for development in a plot format designed to break down into individual installments that worked as self-contained stories as well as chapters in a larger tale. The main appeal of Champions is going to be its characters, not its plot, which is why a proper episodic-series approach is better for giving them room to breathe and grow.

I've found in general, I prefer superhero adaptations to be TV series over movies, they're just able to go so much deeper into the characters and the world on a series than in a movie. So I would definitely be up for a Champions series, and since the majority of the characters are being introduced in the series, it does make sense do their team story in the same format.

I don't necessarily disagree, but at the same time I think it depends on the story. There are definitely shows amongst the MCU's recent crop that would have been better served as movies, like say: 'F&tWS', 'Secret Invasion', 'Moon Knight', and I'd even argue the case for 'Ms Marvel'. All of which seemed not to have enough story to tell to fit the time, or in the case of 'Ms Marvel': two unrelated and incongruous stories that got forcibly smashed together.

Conversely; there's been a few films that I think would have worked much better as shows. 'Eternals' leaps to mind for obvious reasons, but also I think 'The Marvels' could have worked better as a show. Less spectacle and more focus on the character interplay that's clearly meant to be at the heart of it, but got lost in the rather forgettable haze that movie ended up as, sadly.

I wasn't really talking about anything this specific, but I was pretty happy with those as series, or OK with in the case of Secret Invasion. I don't remember having any real problems with their pacing.

I really like The Eternals as a movie, but it would have been nice to get to spend more time with the individual Eternals and really dig deeper into their history and conflict with the Deviants.
