Wow, that's a huge shock. The cast must either really love the Russo Bros. or they have some really great ideas for Doomsday and Secret Wars, because those are the only ways I can imagine both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans coming back.

Or Evans just likes having dump trucks full of Disney/Marvel money backed up to his house so he can afford to do whatever art house projects he's eyeing up.

Downey too. I'm sure they didn't come cheap.

I'm not a comics guy, so I claim no special insight based on whatever the comics may have done before*, but I'm calling it now: he'll be a fascist Steve Rogers from the Stark-turned-Doom universe. Evans seems like a good dude and a liberal, so he wouldn't want to undercut Mackie as the new Captain America, and a certain election a few weeks ago most likely sold him on subverting his own heroic portrayal. We know Downey is coming back as a villain; I highly doubt Evans won't have wanted the same deal.

Like Mordo says, "The bill comes due. Always." America voted for an overt fascist, so we'll get a fascist Cap.

*I do know there was a controversial Hydra-serving Steve Rogers comic arc, which his use of "Hail Hydra" in Endgame was a clever reference to. But I'd bet said comic arc wasn't even close to Evans' primary motivation.

Yeah, that was probably a big part of it too.
I haven't seen Deadpool & Wolverine yet, but I think read somewhere that they killed off Johnny Storm, so I guess that rules out him coming back as Johnny again.
I realized D&W was a MCU movie, so I guess this is actually his second return to the MCU.

Fascist Cap goes back to the 70s and has been revisited several times. The original Fascist Cap was a retcon of the Cap stories of the 1950s. Usually known as the "Commie-Smasher Cap." The retcon made him more than a bit racist and sexist in addition to being anti-Communism. A Cap variant like that could be something to see in the next two Avengers films.

You forgot about the dump truck piles of money delivered to their front doors from Disney. :) I mean this does sort of indicate how little trust Disney has in some of it's other MCU characters to carry a movie. The need to go for the sure thing. My money is old man Rogers has been living on the moon, like the rumors and somehow Dr Strange makes him young again, but maybe just for a short while because he is needed for plot reasons. They can play him as a old man who has lived and seen it all being given one more shot of youth, even if it's only temporary. Maybe he was even close to dying and he knows this is going to be the last thing he really does before dying and going to Heaven to be with Peggy again.

I really hope neither Chris Evans nor Hayley Atwell ever will show up again as OG Steve Rogers and OG Peggy Carter in live action AFTER Endgame has taken place.
The way they concluded it with Steve choosing to stay in the past, living out his life with Peggy - just a wonderful way to end their story arcs. They stuck the landing.

If it's after Endgame has taken place, but showing us their NEW lives lived IN THE PAST, what they did/will do until Endgame - say like the founding of S.H.I.E.L.D by Peggy - that would be the exception I'd could be on board with.

Having them show up as variants (Captain Carter, What IF) really depends a lot on their story and characters arcs, but I wouldn't mind it.

I however totally dislike the idea of them playing other characters in the MCU other than variants of Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers/Torch respectively.
