What grade would you give the Marvel Cinematic Universe? (Ever-Changing Question)

Directors are capable of working in more than one style. Steven Spielberg directed both 1941 and Schindler's List, both E.T. and Amistad. The Russo Brothers directed TV sitcoms before doing blockbuster Marvel action movies, and Iron Man/The Mandalorian's Jon Favreau started in comedy too.

So the question is not what the show is like or what it's about; the question is how well it's directed. And I'd say these directors have done excellent work on Loki. I was particularly impressed by their handling of the shocking prison-cell scene in this week's episode, keeping the violence offscreen and focusing on the watchers' reactions, which was far more potent.
I have to admit, I have the bad habit of associating directors with just one style or genre. So with Speilberg, I tend to think of things like Jaws or Jurrasic Park or War of the Worlds, and forget that he did things like ET or Schindler's List or the Post.

So I finally watched Spider-Man: No Way Home for the first time (yes, I'm extremely late), and it actually ended up being a decent movie (despite making many of the same mistakes that plagued both Homecoming and Far From Home, as well as a few new mistakes, such as fridging May), and may actually have persuaded me to buy both it and FFH on Blu-ray* (I already own Homecoming, which I bought mainly for the sake of being a Spider-Man 'completionist').

* Although I apparently can't actually buy the version of NWH that I saw, which frustratingly means that I'm going to be stuck with a shorter, less complete version of the movie if I do buy the Blu-ray

Dammit, this reminded me I still need to finish watching the extended edition! I started it a while back, but it was after a long day and never finished it. I hope Dutch Netflix still has it.

What mistakes?

What mistakes?

Making MCU Peter play second fiddle to guest characters.

NWH thankfully does a decent job of mitigating the damage that MCU Peter being a supporting character in his own franchise causes to his characterization by using the Multiverse angle, which is why I came away from it feeling largely positive.

I have to disagree here. One of the biggest things in the Spiderman comics to me, has always been that a big part of Peter's/Spiderman's strength was the people around him and supporting him. Either as Peter, Spiderman or both. These movies made it all about the whole, not just the title character. In my point of view anyway.

Exactly. Peter was still always the main hero in those movies and figured out the bad guys when no one else did. Idk how he played second fiddle

He never played second fiddle

I disagree.

Tony Stark and a "fake" version of Nick Fury got shoved into Homecoming and Far From Home, immediately shifting the focus to them and away from MCU Peter. FFH also unnecessarily tossed in Happy Hogan just to give May a throwaway and stereotypical romance plotline that ended up being moot anyway because of the decision to fridge her in NWH.

Stephen Strange being in NWH initially demonstrated that the filmmakers didn't learn their lesson, but then we got the Multiverse storyline, which finally put the majority of the focus on Peter and also actually made the inclusion of "guest characters" work as an affirmation of MCU Peter's characterization, which is ironic since two of said guest characters were other versions of Peter.

I will never love the MCU Spider-Man movies as much as I did the Raimiverse and Webbverse movies, but NWH did end up being a positive conclusion, for the most part, to at least the first part of MCU Peter's story despite two of his movies not actually focusing on him to the degree that they should have.

I don't get how that's playing second fiddle. Peter is still the main focus

He's not, though, because of the decision to put Tony Stark, Fake Nick Fury, Happy Hogan, and Stephen Strange in movies that they didn't need to be - and shouldn't have been - a part of.

NWH at least ends up making Stephen's presence relevant to MCU Peter's characterization, such as it is, through the introduction of the Multiverse angle and the crossover between the MCU and the Raimiverse and Webbverse.

When it comes to the first two MCU Spider-Man movies, more time with Tony/Happy/etc means less time with the mostly terrible supporting cast, so I wish we'd gotten a lot more of the non-Spider-man MCU characters in those first two movies, maybe then they would be movies I could stand to rewatch.

As it is, at least No Way Home had the alternate Spider-Men and the villains, who are what make that movie good. Nothing against Tom Holland, he's decent in his role, but I really don't need to see any more of "Ned" or Zendaya in the MCU. If they do a 4th MCU Spider-Man film, I hope they take advantage of the clean slate from the end of No Way Home and just do a whole new supporting cast.

Then again, a 4th film doesn't seem very likely anyway. It feels like we're just going to be stuck with weird Spider-Man related movies like Kraven for the forseeable future.

Barring rights weirdness or Tom Holland straight up quitting I think a fourth film is basically guaranteed.

Pretty sure making Kraven doesn't allow Sony to reset the clock on their Spider-man rights so they need a new Spider-man movie in the next few years no matter what.

Yeah, still boggles my mind where the Russo's came from. Though it shouldn't.

It's so awesome that people in charge can see the potential when looking at these things.

In fairness Benson and Moorhead have been doing really interesting stuff for some time. Spring in particular is incredible
