Ok so take a deep breath folks, I hope you're sat down as this is gonna come as a huge, gigantic shock.
But, believe it or not, Netflix have cancelled Punisher and Jessica Jones

https://www.superherohype.com/news/436137-the-punisher-jessica-jones-canceled-at-netflix

"Oh my god, I can't believe it"- said no one ever

I was thinking they'd actually cancel JJ after it had actually aired, but yeah, not a surprise. The surprise for me is that they actually waited this long to say about The Punisher being cancelled after the last season went up.

I saw a headline on Yahoo about 3 weeks ago saying Jon Bernthal was ok with it being cancelled. Maybe that wasn't "official?"

Yeah, we knew it was coming, but I guess it's "good" that it's official.

I agree that it's weird that they didn't wait until the third season of Jessica Jones aired. Hell, we don't even have a release date yet! That has to be unprecedented for any show on any network.

Obviously, things grew more certain with each one, but I don't know you could be so transparent about Punisher and then be coy about Jessica Jones. At least Iron Fist had problems that suggested a second season could have been done as a one time thing. Luke Cage was apparently cancelled because of behind the scenes creative differences. At this point, I didn't think it was a trend. Daredevil was cancelled "because it was too good." OK, no one bought that and, at that point, it became obvious. But what were they going to do with Punisher? Say it was also too good, but don't worry about Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones was plausibly the last season either way since the show runner was leaving.

I still don't think it makes as much economic sense as everyone says for Netflix to stop having a competitor's property on their network. I realize it means they're giving money to Disney who can use that money for their streaming service. On the other hand, if a Marvel fan can only afford one service and not the other, it's entirely possible the Marvel shows on Netflix would be a big enough draw for them to choose Netflix since they can also get non-Marvel shows they like.

But I guess they saw things differently.

No, there have certainly been shows where it was announced in advance that their upcoming season would be their last. Heck, Syfy's 12 Monkeys had its ending point announced two seasons in advance.

Well, as the article said, Netflix found that most of the Marvel shows' viewers were already Netflix subscribers, so Marvel wasn't enough of a draw to bring a significant number of new subscribers to the service. If that was true before there was a competing service, it would presumably be even more true after there was a competing service.

A Letter to Marvel Television Fans from Jeph Loeb...

It had never been done before.

Four separate television series, each with different super-talented showrunners, writers, directors, cast and crew, coming out months apart and then...

...they would meet in a single event series all set in the heart of New York City.

We called them The Defenders.

And together we were thrilled by stories of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and even the Punisher joined in!

They said it couldn't be done.

But Marvel assembled amazing teams to write, produce, direct, edit, and score 13 seasons and 161 one-hour episodes.

Take a moment and go online and look at the dazzling list of actors, writers, directors, and musicians who graced us with the very best of their craft.

We loved each and every minute of it.

And we did it all for you -- the fans -- who cheered for us around the world and made all the hard work worth it.

So, Thank You!

On behalf of everyone at Marvel Television, we couldn't be more proud or more grateful to our audience.

Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters... but you know Marvel better than that.

As Matthew Murdock's Dad once said, "The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it's how he gets back up."

To be continued...!

- Jeph Loeb and all of us at Marvel Television

And LOST three seasons in advance. But I didn't mean a planned ending, but instead outright cancellation which was in turn announced prior to that final season, as has happened to Jessica Jones.

I'm not sure the distinction applies. I got the impression that the only reason 12 Monkeys ended when it did was because the producers were informed that the fourth season would be the last one Syfy would buy, not because they'd always intended it to run four years. I'm sure I've seen other examples too, instances where a network agreed to pick up only one more season, so the producers and the audience knew in advance that it would be the last.

It's weird that she says she's "a bit too old" for the suit when she's 7 years younger than Robert Downey Jr.

Not too surprised to hear that, if RDJ is done after Endgame, then it makes sense that at least some of his supporting cast would be too. Since Happy has become a Spider-Man character too, I could maybe see him continuing to appear in those movies.

Sounds like Paltrow's susceptible to our society's gendered double standard about aging.

Or she just feels she's grown beyond superhero movies mentally, not physically. It is actually possible she has an opinion of her own. Or, you could be right. Or, it's something else. I feel you're kinda putting a meaning behind her words there.

Even weirder is that this seems to presuppose she's done anything but the odd cameo since 'Iron Man 3', which is going on 6 years old at this point. So this is basically just saying she'll continue on as normal.

...Or she's just waffling.
I generally don't keep track of celebrity gossip, but is this not the same person that insisted on referring to a breakup as "a mutual uncoupling" or some-such tosh? And has a side business that sells gullible people highly dubious, if not actively harmful "beauty products"?
