Yeah, if he comes back, I'd rather them hint what the show has done (like that "thought you were dead"- "got better" line mentioned earlier) than explain it again.

So, the Russo Brothers said there could be 67 characters in the Infinity War movies! I made a list myself and came up with 33 old characters and 7 new ones. I'm guessing the 67 number includes "Random Alien #7"?

Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, War Machine, Scarlett Witch, Falcon, The Vision, Ant Man, Black Panther, Dr Strange, Spider-Man, Winter Soldier

Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Phil Coulson, Pepper Potts, Jane Foster, Helen Cho, General Ross, Sharon Carter, Martin Freeman

Starlord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Groot, Thanos, Loki, Nebula, Cate Blanchett, The Collector

Adam Warlock, Black Dwarf, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, Supergiant, Death
Happy, Betty Ross, Heimdall, Sif, Warriors 3, Odin, Dr Selvig, Darcy, Nova Prime, Dey, Wasp, Hank Pym, Aunt Mae, whoever Spidey's girlfriend is, Captain Marvel

Just some other possibilities. Along with any of the Defenders, but like the AoS guys as much as I want to see it I have a feeling we won't. Like Joss Whedon said about Age of Ultron, he was starting to plan and write that when they were making the pilot of Agents of Shield, yet the movie "took place" during late Season 2.
If they're planning Infinity Wars now, Part 2 isn't gonna be out till AoS has almost finished its SIXTH season (let's just say it's still on the air.) I doubt they have a plan for where all the characters are gonna be for that far ahead tbh.
Think of mid-season 3 of a show like Buffy, and then think of late Season 6... A lot happened and changed.

I imagine that like with the first Infinity Gauntlet storyline most of the heroes will be taken by Thanos with a mere snap of his fingers.

So, not much of a surprise, they were only being figurative when they said 67

Obviously not 67 main charachers, but just roughly all together in total over both movies.
Like I could see there been a little scene with Tony neat the start where Pepper Potts & Happy are there, but then that's it and they're never seen for the rest of the flicks. Same for Aunt Mae or something. They'll probably a lot of things like that

^And of course it stands to reason that not every single character in the movie is an established comics character. Most scripts have minor characters -- background soldiers or technicians, endangered civilians, TV reporters, partygoers or bar/restaurant patrons, cab drivers, doctors, you name it.

Yeah, I figured the whole 67 characters thing wasn't as literal as everybody seemed to think it was. I was wondering if that was just the number of characters who are available to them to use if they choose to.

^They specifically address that.
One way to do it would be if they eventually did an AoS movie (unlikely in the foreseeable future but not impossible) and have an original Avenger (preferably Cap or Tony) at least cameo so they can do that "how are you not dead!?" scene.
Both RDJ and Jeremy Renner have stated they would be open to making an appearance on AoS. Should the show runners be able to align schedules it wouldn't be anything to have one/both appear for a cameo even and BOOM---explanation. Coulson shows up in the movies. Even if Cap or Thor didn't get the memo it could easily go:
Cap,"Coulson, Phil Coulson is alive?"
Tony,"Yeah, I told you didn't I, I'm sure I told you. Look I'll explain latter but yes, he's alive--bad guys at your 10 o'clock".

^The problem isn't the who, it's the where.
It seems Marvel's current policy is to put nothing in the movies that *necessitates* people watching anything other than the movies to understand what's going on.
Which is why you're not likely to see Luke Cage, Matt Murdock or Jessica Jones waltz onto screen in the new Spider-Man movie, with the expectation that the audience know who they are already (as they would with say, Tony, Fury or Nat.)

Basically, this inter-connectivity thing isn't a two way street when it comes to the TV shows. That may eventually change, but for now that's just how it is.

I suspected that they'd have to walk back some of that "67 characters" stuff, but it did trigger some amusement at my end. What can I say? It wasn't the exact number, but the sound of it that made me go to that place for Adobe Illustrator as comedic design tool of choice.

I'd buy it.

If he was going to appear in any of the movies, I'm thinking that or GotG Vol.2 are the most likely choices.
