Can you imagine how shocked we would've been by this announcement had it not been for the Sony hack?

I think there's a chance this wouldn't have been happening without the Sony hack. It both pushed Sony further down and simultaneously showed them how enthusiastic the audience is for Spidey in the MCU.

The Wrap is reporting that Garfield is out.

Shame that. I think Sony gave up too soon if you ask me.

Better that than holding out and losing the deal.

Fantastic news that Spider-Man is finally being brought into the fold. However, I'm disappointed (but unsurprised) that Andrew Garfield is probably out. Along with Emma Stone, he was one of the few things Sony got right.

Yeah, I didn't like the second movie, but Garfield was fantastic as Peter/Spidey and hoped he'd stay. I'm keeping my fingers crossed they don't reboot again and stay with Peter as Spidey rather go with the 'Ultimate' - the public know Peter Parker, so I'd be fine with them just recasting and carrying on. There's no need to mention Gwen or the previous films.

So Inhumans are now appearing after Avengers Infinity War? I figured they'd be relevant for that plot.

It's amazing how quickly plans change. I'm looking forward to Spider-Man, although I hope he doesn't entirely recreate his role in the Civil War storyline. That would be a bad way to start out.

A shame that Garfield is out; I thought he did a good job and was not the problem. I liked the first ASM and liked their take on the origin story; but ASM 2 felt like it was in a different world from the first film (and seemed more influenced by Joel Schumacher to me).

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what Marvel does with it. I'm a little leary of introducing their Spidey shoe horned into another movie; but Marvel has built up a lot of credibility. I give them the benefit of the doubt.

Another interesting bit about this Spidey news is that it gives Marvel access to the Spider-man family of characters too. That clears the way for telling the aftermath of Civil War with Norman Osborn taking control and the creation of the Dark Avengers. It would give a new spin to that Sinister Six movie (allowing Sony to capitalize on the Avengers brand) while also either leading into Infinity War or becoming its aftermath (where we would find the Dark Avengers in charge).

I haven't seen the Interview (at least not yet) but I have this image in my head of a stinger scene after the end credits. Its late at night and Kim Jong Un is sitting alone in his office working. Suddenly a figure emerges from the darkness. Its Andrew Garfield carrying a gun.
"You bastard!" He cries and shoots him.

I'm so glad Garfield is out and they're rebooting.

I enjoyed Amazing Spiderman ok, I thought they had improved tremendously on the swinging effects, and Garfield was solid enough in the role. But the movie was not very exciting.

And despite Spiderman being tied with Superman as my all time favorite superhero, I *still* haven't seen Amazing 2.

I just wasn't excited for it.

I can barely remember anything about Amazing 1 to begin with. I was also , admittedly, slightly bitter about the Raimi-verse being rebooted so quickly.

The 3rd one was disappointing, but I had hoped the 4th would've done some damage control, especially since the first 2 movies did such a great job. I also preferred Tobey in the role.

It's funny, my two favorite superheroes have been rebooted twice in less than a decade.

It kinda weakens their movie-verse a bit IMO.

I'm totally NOT excited about Batman-Superman.

However, since Marvel is cranking out EXCELLENT movies, I'm automatically more excited for Spidey.

It's really time for Spidey to make a comeback.

(Superman hasn't had a great movie since Superman II, 35 years ago, so I'm not holding my breath.)

I'm just wondering if we're going to have to sit through another Uncle Ben origin tale. I hope not. Although Spidey's origin hasn't been done to death as Superman's, Uncle Ben and the spider-biting are getting to be as bad as Krypton's explosion.

Temporalflux, that could also lead to a Thunderbolts movie as well I think, since that's sort of what Dark Avengers is anyway (Although there have been some different incarnations of Thunderbolts over the years such as the recent Red Hulk one). After all part of the concept of the Sinister Six movie was to have some of them change and become heroes, which was part of what happened in the early Thunderbolts series.

As for the origin being recapped again, maybe the best thing would be something like The Incredible Hulk movie, which had the origin (which was inspired by the Bixby TV show and different from the 2003 film) recounted over the opening credits using newsprint/flashback/footage etc. (Sort of like the recent Godzilla movie). Technically we saw origin recaps done through openings in the original Spider-man trilogy sequels, but they had the other films to work with.

I didn't get the hate (or dislike) for ASM2; I thought it was a fun movie. And it's a shame therefore if now the mythology those two movies built up is just going down the toilet. And I loved Andrew Garfield in role.


... But hey I'll look on the bright side, Spidey in Avengers. In the words of Rocket Racoon "oh... yeah"

The fact that Sony still has creative control on the Spider-man movies has me leery. So the new actor's first appearance will be canon in the MCU, but not necessarily the rest of it?

I imagine Sony will lease Spiderman to Marvel similar to how Paramount leased Hulk, and comparing Paramount's Hulk to Marvel's Incredible Hulk, Marvel's Spiderman should be a blast.

Hopefully. I'm kind of hoping they treat the two Garfield movies as in continuity but never referenced. Everyone's recast, Gwen is never mentioned again and at some point Mary Jane is introduced.
