And polymaths like Hank - and Reed and Tony and Victor and so on - we can trace back to the influence of Doc Savage and the like. Probably further.

I have this book about Doc Savage that was written by Philip Jose Farmer that I just cannot get into reading! I've tried a couple of times now.

Yeah. Another teaser for a teaser, alright.

And the joke fits, even though it's a bit of a pain.

Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life? Love that book. Not as good as Tarzan Alive: A Definitive Biography of Lord Greystoke , though.

I recently watch Avengers and there's a scene that always raises an eyebrow, Thor is talking to Coulson about "the first time he came to earth", referring to the events in the first movie, and then Coulson looks at him weird. If the legend of Thor dates back to Norse mythology, does that mean the present Thor isn't the same Thor of legend, or will he get sent back in time in Thor: Ragnarok or something?

Or the Norse were just aware of him through meeting other Asgardians and he himself never arrived.

I may be misremembering but I think the first film implies that Thor and company have indeed visited Earth in the past. Nothing overt or concrete but there were more than a few lines that clearly implied it.

^Fandrall-- "This isn't Earth, where can just summon some lightning and the mortals will worship you as a god, this is Jotunheim!"

Fandral said in the first movie that htey had been to earth in the past. Though in the Avengers movie I'm sure Thor was refereing to the events in the first Thor movie.

^Yeah, right after the Bilgesnipe comment he says, "When I first came to earth, Loki's rage followed me here and your people paid the price, and now again...".

I know they mentioned that Thor came to earth before so was this just a slip or did Loki do something similar before, back in Norse times?

I think it wsa a sliplup and refered only to the first Thor movie.

Well, just modify it slightly, Thor was talking to Coulson, so "When I first came to Earth and met you, ..." and it fits, but that's a little bit of a run on that a script writer may not think is needed. Only crazy pedantic nuts like us would miss that, right? :)

I think it's clearly refrencing the first Thor movie, which was probably the first time Thor was on Earth in any extended fashion. Short visits not included.

Then Thor should have said "The last time I came to Earth..." or "On my previous visit to your planet..."

why does everyone assume Thor had been to Earth before.

Norse myths?

Other Asgardians have been to Earth in the past, as established in Agents of SHIELD. They, or other Asgardians, or others from other Realms, could have told stories about Thor on Earth in the past that became Norse myths supplementing whatever people saw directly, without Thor having come to Earth himself before.
