Hulk and Ant-Man must have really done poorly then, as they opened in the much safer and more predictable pre-pandemic world!

Well it's not adjusted for inflation which is normally how films are compared - in today's money, the Hulk took $77 million or so. it was also not a sequel to a film that made a billion dollars...

And while not a sequel, it was preceded by Ang Lee’s Hulk, a film that bombed and was widely loathed by audiences and critics alike.

Or, like I said, in a world where the economy was crushed by a pandemic that changed people's movie viewing habits forever (along with streaming options) and how they spent their harder to save disposable income.

You can't compare pre-and post pandemic box offices in any fair or meaningful way.

OK- so this looks like it will be outperformed by The Meg 2 and the Nun 2 and M3GAN. FNAF made for a fraction of the budget will outperform it and was released last week.

What's the excuse for that?

The only question at this point is who at Marvel gets thrown under the bus for Disney shareholders and Bob Iger.

People waiting for it to show up in a month on Disney+ is an easy one of many reasons.

Edited to add: Especially since The Marvels is a way better movie than all those listed. Especially the Hulk, which pains me to say since he's my favourite character and I wanted better from him.

None. The poor performance of (and torrential flood of excuses made for) The Marvels speaks to what those less-than-impressed audience members have touched on: they do not like the main characters, there's no interesting or creative story to be found, and some felt it was yet another downturn in Marvel productions of late. No amount of alleged "external factors" has anything to do with the indifference or flat out rejection of The Marvels. This is about audience perception.

The musical chairs game will be played while Iger shrugs his shoulders and probably talks about "...some exciting things are coming for Marvel, but it takes quite some time to build to that..."

UK friday box office was £1.09 million which is 75% down on the first friday of Captain Marvel so it died here as well.

Maybe general audiences just haven't been properly introduced to Khan yet...

The Meg 2 starring Jason Statham who has a loyal fanbase, The Nun 2 which is part of the Conjuring Universe with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson who have a loyal fanbase, M3GAN didn't do better than this movie, and FNAF which was a runaway success game series.

Sounds reasonable.

Not to mention the fact that it was released at the tail end of an actors strike, so none of the movies star power was able to go out and promote the movie prior to release.

ETA: And I agree with you about pre and post pandemic theater habits. Speaking for myself, I've only been to the movie theater three times in the post pandemic era, and they've all been Marvel movies. Whereas, pre-pandemic I was an opening night for all Marvel movies if I could manage it kind of person. The Marvels will be the fourth on Monday. Pretty much everything else, with the possible exception of Star Wars, I am more than content to wait for streaming and watch on my more than adequate sized home screen. I'm even waiting for home streaming to watch Indiana Jones, which 25-year-old me just can't comprehend.

Armchair quarterbacking, but in hindsight Disney Plus was the wrong way to introduce that character. Based on the Nielson numbers, people didn't watch Ms Marvel and didn't care. The show didn't accomplish much.

It may have been way too soon to introduce that character. Audiences barely connected with Captain Marvel. They needed more time with her before introducing her obsessed fangirl sidekick.

One of the many poor decisions of Phases 4 and 5.

Just based on the low viewership for Ms Marvel and the low week-to-week retention, the character would have probably benefited from being introduced in another character's film, like America Chavez was. Instead of a D+ series that audiences didn't watch.

I can't help but wonder what, if anything, the doom-sayers who are predicting that The Marvels failing financially is going to result in massive changes or the downfall of Marvel Studios entirely are going to have to say when/if the only thing that changes going forward is a recasting of the character of Kang.

I don't see anyone here making that claim? Got a quote?

One massive bomb out of 23 or so movies isn't going to be their downfall. There will probably be some major overhauling and maybe quicker turnaround for Spider-man and X-men movies.

"Hey! Hey! We had a few bumps in the road but don't you worry! All will be forgotten and Spider-man will be back!

The last-minute push for The Marvels with an appearance by star Brie Larson on The Tonight Show and at a theater in NYC post-actors strike have not weekend moved grosses any higher for what is Marvel Studios‘ The Marvels which is seeing a Friday in the vicinity of where we expected it at $21.3M and a weekend opening between $47M-$52M, the lowest ever for Disney‘s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Oh, also, The Marvels gets one of several post-pandemic B CinemaScores from audiences after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (B+), Thor Love & Thunder (B+), Eternals (B), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (B). Disney’s official numbers are coming soon.

By all accounts and by all sources, a disastrous result for a $200M Marvel Studios movie. But, wait, didn’t you declare Apple Original Studios’ and Paramount’s $200M Killers of the Flower Moon at $44M a success a few weeks ago? Just sit down, I’ll explain in a bit. The Marvels misfire is about the rusting of a platinum brand that’s in need of some serious –not polishing, rather resurfacing.
