A couple of tidbits from Samuel L Jackson. First, he reveals that Martin Freeman will be appearing in Secret Invasion as Everett K Ross (or perhaps a Skrull pretending to be Everett K Ross).

Second, he states that it's easy for directors to bash Marvel movies when people aren't watching theirs. I agree where he says "movies are movies". I'm not missing out on the latest Martin Scorsese gangster flick or Jennifer Aniston rom-com because of Marvel and Star Wars movies. I'm not going to see those movies anyway because the subject matter doesn't interest me.

Fantastic! More Martin Freeman is always a plus, no matter who he's playing.

Indeed. I'm tired of directors such as himself who take this route of criticism. If you don't like them, fine. But to be so snobbish and full of yourself to "decree" superhero movies as not movies is just, well, fucking dumb.

But what do I know? I think Scorsese is overrated.

Scorsese made many of my favourite films so I won't criticize him as a director, but I do think he is being ridiculous in his statements about movies. It's a case of knocking something he doesn't understand.

I do think that many of us tend to see action blockbusters at the movie theatres more than drama or rom-coms. I believe that that is almost entirely due to the cost of going to see a movie. When I was in college I saw a movie or two a week and could afford that on my tight student budget with matinee or special day pricing, or seeing a movie in a second run theatre. Now is costs a hundred dollars to take my family to see a movie--or fifty for my wife and I to go. That fifty bucks is something we'd rather spend on a better restaurant these days.

I admire Scorsese as much for his brilliance as a movie historian as his brilliance as a director. The man has celluloid in his veins.

I also enjoy Marvel and DC movies and the MCU is something I’ve been wanting to happen since the 90s.

Seeing Scorsese be derogatory of MCU movies two or three years ago was like when your beloved parent doesn’t understand your friends. Still love both and there’s no actual requirement for them to get on in order to love either.

This has its own thread in TV and Media, but it's worth reporting here that William Hurt, aka Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, has passed away at the too young age of 71.

The MCU obviously had plans for the character, but I imagine Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Contessa Valentina de La Fontaine can serve the same story purpose.

It was apparently Prostate Cancer. Now we know why he looked weak and needed that walking stick in Black Widow...

And here I thought they were low-key setting up Red Hulk. (Yet another Hulk-related thing we'll never see now... thanks a lot, Universal!) BW was shot nearly three years ago, was he really suffering that long? Poor guy... :weep:

WOw, I hadn't heard about that yet. RIP

Cool, I'm a big fan of Freeman's.

I tend to wonder if people like Scorsese and Coppola are ripping on the MCU and superhero movies, just because they are frustrated that they are so much more popular than their movies.

Going to the theater is still relatively cheap when my mom and I go to the matinees, but we still to go for the really big scale stuff with a lot of big action and special effects. Most of the smaller scale, grounded dramas and comedies are just as enjoyable on a TV as in the theater, but stuff like the MCU, and other big action movies really need to be seen in the theater to get the full experience.

I never get the popcorn and drinks! I just bring in my own water and snack bar. :p
Our theater does $2 drink refills for a year if you buy a specific cup, so we do that, and then bring in our own candy. We're not paying 3 times as much for the exact same box of candy we get at the grocery store.

I've pretty much quit drinking soda (except on the rarest occasion) and most theaters only sell that as their drinks...and overly priced bottles of water.

Yeah, I'm bringing in my own water.
