I think the point is less about Black's voice and more about his acting range. There's no requirement that a character has to sound a certain way. Charles Xavier was a New York native in the comics, but they still cast an Englishman in the role. And if you insist on the Thing having a deep, gravelly voice, then it could be processed to sound deeper, like they did with Ruffalo's voice in Thor: Ragnarok.

His acting range in the Tropic Thunder clips does not look any different to the rest of his career. Almost every scene has something in it that feels exactly like his other performances with the sole difference being that this particular character isn't as inoffensive as usual (but that's really just down to the facts of the character, not the performance).

Well, honestly, I'm not sold on the idea of Black as Ben Grimm myself. But I'm just not willing to jump to the conclusion that an actor is incapable of expanding their range beyond what we've seen before. There was a time that nobody thought Robin Williams or Jim Carrey could pull off dramatic acting, and they were fantastic at it. I thought Scarlett Johansson was a weak actress in Iron Man 2, but she was terrific in The Avengers and everything since. People can surprise you if they're given the chance.

Nobody's jumping to the conclusion he's fundamentally incapable. People are allowed to have informed opinions (based on a career that is or at least feels a lot longer and more prolific than what Jim Carrey and Robin Williams had when they were trying to go dramatic) while also acknowledging that people can potentially surprise you. I'm just saying even if I liked this character a lot (and even though I do like Black in plenty of roles) that this casting would not excite me in the slightest and if I were in charge of making the decision, it'd be an almost certain no unless he really brought something special to an audition (which he hasn't even had one yet if I understand things correctly).

I don't think Ben has ever sounded the way he is supposed to sound when the character has been in live action or in animated series. The character should have a pretty strong accent based on his Lower East Side background and the way his dialogue was originally written. It seems likely that Stan Lee had a pretty specific accent in mind based on Ben's background and life story. I think if we are arguing about the way Ben Grimm SHOULD sound then accent plays a more important role than tone of his voice.

I saw a random part of the movie..i think where the actor he was playing wasn't being "himself' but the soldier character...and it looked distinct

Did anyone see Bernie? (the movie, not the candidate). I never saw it, but my understanding was THAT was a SERIOUS role.

But we will see...

Well, I don't recall exactly what accent Chuck McCann used for the Thing, but he (McCann) was a Brooklyn native.
I don't think I've seen any of that series, or pretty much anything from the nineties to be honest--but I don't even remember knowing about it until just now.

Tigra and Dazzler has been put on hold while a new writing staff is recruited. Chelsea handler is still the executive producer.

They've met a couple of times, mostly in crowd scenes during grand crossovers. But I don't think they're close.

It's hardly unprecedented for TV adaptations to team up superheroes with no connection in the comics, from Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends making Iceman Spidey's sidekick to Legends of Tomorrow's eclectic mix of leftover characters.

New writing staff doesn't seem to be a good sign.

That depends entirely on who they get to replace the previous staff.

No matter how drunk you are, you do not ignore a call from someone like Bob Iger.
