That is certainly one interpretation, but it fails to account for the ability to instantaneously alter a person's mind. All other tesseract based technology we've seen has been purely based around energy generation.
The staff being the mind gem on the other hand, accounts for this and everything else just fine.

The original owner (in my assumption) simply knew how to manipulate it's energy in that form. The tesseract is also capable of (and probably not limited to) making energy guns, bombs, force fields, teleporting individuals, and opening portals. It also has the ability to burn through certain metals on contact but not through living tissue so it may have properties that react to the living.

It didn't "make" energy guns, it just powered them. This was explained fairly explicitly in TFA. Just like it powered every other device plugged into it, like Zola's bombs, planes, Selvig's force field and Stark's arc reactor.
The energy is just a by-product though. The cube's function is as the "space gem", it creates wormholes across the universe. This requires energy. LOTS and LOTS of energy. Enough energy to punch a hole in space-time and keep it open. The fact that it gets hot enough to melt steel while at full draw shouldn't be all that surprising.

Maybe he did. Isn't Thanos 2000+ years old? 70 years might be like a few months to him.

A fair point I suppose. Maybe he figured it's nice and safe on a primitive backwater planet.

If that's the case then maybe it was Thor's little adventure that got him moving on it. If Asgard was taking an interest in Earth again then how long before Odin notices the tesseract is no longer hidden and decides to take it back out of Thanos's reach.

I'm still wondering where the Red Skull ended up. Did he pop out where Thanos is? I really don't think he was killed, but transported somewhere. Maybe he was why Thanos knew the tesseract was on Earth.

Could be anywhere really; the universe is a big place. Assuming he's not in the stinger for GotG (which wouldn't surprise me) I'll just assume that Marvel have no immediate plans to bring him back just yet, but made sure the door is left open should the need arise.

Does 21st Century Fox have the rights to the Shi'ar as part of X-Men rights? With Guardians of the Galaxy coming up, the MCU's distant space is due to be fleshed out in much more detail. The Shi'ar may principally be involved in X-Men comic stories, but I think it would be great if the MCU could bring in more species like the Shi'ar.

I would have to imagine the Shi'ar are X-Men. That's a bit of a shame, just because I don't think the cinematic X-Men will ever go into space. I think there's a good argument that the Fantastic Four could, though. So maybe Fox could explore them that way.

It's hard to say for sure where the Shi'ar would fall in terms of movie rights given the amount of overlapping continuity in the Marvel Universe. It's possible it's a similar situation to the Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch thing where certain characters or concepts can be used by both companies, but the links to the respective properties cannot be referred to.

I'm just speculating, but in this instance I would have thought that *IF* this were the case then it may be as simple as Marvel being able to use the Shi'ar, but not being allowed to use/mention the Phoenix force.

It all depends on exactly what terms Marvel agreed to back when the sold the rights.

I think we now have very good hopes of Anthony Mackie taking over the Captain America mantle after Chris Evans and Avengers 3.
No, not really.
Sebastian Stan has a 6/7 pic deal. If anyone takes over in the MCU it'll be Winter Soldier.

Sam Wilson as Cap will only be for the comics.

When and if WS ends his tenure as Cap it'll be Steve(recast) returning to the role for the MCU.

Wow, I know you mean business because you said seriously. Powerful stuff.

Remeder's run was/is actually my introduction to Cap in the comics and I'm loving it.

Assuming of course they don't just recast.

Recasting would be my personal preference. Just as I don't want to see Miles Morales or Ben Reilly in a Spider-Man movie, I'd prefer that they keep Steve Rogers as Captain America in the movies. I'm not really even all that keen on seeing Bucky as Cap, and I loved that story.

Whereas I feel the opposite - recasting breaks verisimilitude. I'd rather see them use other characters than recast Steve Rogers or Tony Stark.

While I sorta take a middle view. I have no problem with an eventual recast (although the current actors are so iconic in their roles right now), but recasting seems like the lazy way out when you have a whole universe of characters to explore.

I like Bucky Barnes as Captain America because you can explore how he's not Steve Rogers (the same is true with Falcon as the Captain).

How so? All he's saying is they aren't going to be pressured into making a female lead or minority lead film. If/when they make it, it's going to be on their time. Not because anyone told them they should make one.

Agreed.

I mean I certainly hope we get a Ms. Marvel and Black Widow movie down the road at some point, but I want it to be because they have a story they want to tell and a strong script to support it. I don't want to see something they just shove out the door because a quarterly pie chart or a buch of twitter users told them too. That's how you get stinkers like Catwoman and Green Lantern.

I think Ms. Marvel is more likely, just because it's the name she's been known as for much longer. I wouldn't mind if they refer to her as Captain Marvel in the movie (or at least Captain Carol Danvers, much like there's Captain Steve Rogers), but I suspect they'll go with the more traditional name.

Plus, I could see concerns with people confusing the Captain Marvel with Marvel's Captain America. ;)

It probably would be. But, instead, we'll have Marvel's Ms. Marvel. We can call it MMM for short. :D
