Marvel All New, All Different - Ongoing Discussion (Spoilers)

Me neither. That's pretty cool. Kind of like OTR, or those old Tower Record albums. I'll have to look into it later. I bought the first Kamala Khan TPB-- first Marvel book I've gotten since Civil War-- but I haven't read it yet. Every time I open it, I see the art....

Cool, I didn't know they did audio books of comics.

Recent Marvel Audio Books (that are adaptations of Prose Novels that are adaptations of graphic novels.) produced by Graphic Audio.

The Ultimates: Tomorrow Men

The Ultimates: Against All Enemies

Iron Man: Extremis,

Astonishing X-Men: Gifted,

New Avengers: Breakout

Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon and Groot Steal The Galaxy!

The Death of Captain America,

Secret Wars (This is actually the original Secret War (1984) not Secret Wars from last month, or the Bendis thing from ten years ago, but heavily modernized to be set todayish, with contemporary versions of the Marvel roster of heroes and villains.)

X-Men: Days of Future Past,

Avengers: Everyone Wants to Rule the World

Ant Man: Natural Enemy

So I picked up A-Force #1 despite not planning on it and really fond myself enjoying. The Singularity character is a lot of fun. I'm also diffing the new Iron Man comic.

But Doom hasn't told Reed Richards that he banged Susan, a lot, yet!

Air Force.

A-Force.

Alpha Flight.

Hmmm.

Carol is weird.

The audio book is quite fun as well, which means that there's probably a book book out there some place too.

Cool, I didn't know they did audio books of comics.

Most of GraphicAudio's audio dramatizations come from the comics indirectly: they adapted the novelizations of stories like Final Crisis or Astonishing X-Men: Gifted. Ms. Marvel is the first time they've directly gone from comics to audio. My life loves Kamala Khan, so I bought her the audio drama for Christmas, but we haven't listened to it yet.

I just read Secret Wars # 9. It wasn't a bad ending, but it was a little anti-climactic given they already launched the new Marvel Universe before the series conclusion.

^ Amazing Spider-Man is already at issue six, and several others are four or five issues in. I found the end of Secret Wars to be very satisfying, though. It felt like a proper ending, both to Hickman's run and to certain central character arcs of the old 616 universe.

Just read Secret Wars #9.
I thought it was a wonderful ending to the vast Hickman Marvel Comics Saga. It was a wonderful ending to the Reed/Doom rivalry. Sure it's a shame that it basically ignored everyone else, and the ending was too pat and easy, but I still loved it.

I'm a little confused, though. If Reed became god and remade the universe back to the way it was... why did he keep the villains and evil around? Why was Galactus still alive and well? Why did Doom and everyone still have their powers? Why are the mutants dying out from the Inhuman cloud? Or was the point of the comic that Doom failed in trying to control the world, so Reed succeeded by doing absolutely nothing to control it and just letting things go the way they were. And the only real change was Miles Morales surviving and that was done by the Molecule Man and not Reed.

Also, I was confused by the ending with the Black Panther. Did he use the Time Stone to go back in time to New Avengers #1? I re-read that comic and the dialogue was identical until the ship took off. Does that mean that the Panther we saw in NA #1 was the one from the ending of Secret Wars? Or was it them living a new version of that event, and the multiversal collapse never even happened in this new continuity?

I also loved how the Fantastic Four were written out of the Marvel U. It was done in such a beautiful and poignant way, though it did get a little too metatextual at times.

It's just such a shame that the vast majority of the ending has been spoiled by post-SW comics coming out for months now.

On the whole, I thought Hickman's entire run in the Marvel U (Fantastic Four, Secret Warriors, Avengers) was absolutely brilliant and will stand out as one of the high points of the franchise. It had some unfortunate tangents but man what imagination and drama.

The Secret Wars ending was pretty anti-climatic, but that was to be expected since it ended so long after the other books moved on. As for Hickman, I hated his Avengers run from the beginning, and I'm glad we've got new writers at the helm of the various Avengers books, even if some elements aren't very good (although still much better than anything Hickman did on he Avengers).

the new Avengers books range from pretty good to awful (looking at you Uncanny Avengers!). not surprised 5s hated the Hickman run. its like he's from Bizarro World.

as for Secret Wars #9...it was ok. at least Reed and Sue aren't dead.

I actually was pretty surprised that Reed was alive. I completely expected Doom to kill him and wipe him out from existence, and Susan retires because her husband died. Obviously the death would have been undone in a couple years. This was better. A happy ending for the Richards Family, though it doesn't really feel right that they just leave Ben and Johnny in the lurch. It feels like an editorial decision.

The other thing I was confused about.... Cyclops died in Secret Wars. But in a recent issue of some X-comic it was revealed the Inhumans killed him. But we don't see him getting resurrected at the end of Secret Wars.

i was wondering about Cyclops too. the whole notion of Cyclops suddenly having a Phoenix egg came out of nowhere and has yet to be fully explained.

It's above editorial.

That, as a result of Disney’s highest single shareholder and Marvel CEO Isaac Perlmutter’s anger with Fox Studios over negotiations regarding the film-and-related rights to The Fantastic Four, that Marvel would cancel the Fantastic Four comic rather than provide any promotion,

Another one of Issac's choice decisions, seems to be a moratorium on the invention of any new X-Men Characters, so that FOX wouldn't then have access to any hypothetical new coolness. It's like as if a tribal village in Feudal Europe decided to stop having children so that the local warlord can't stop by once a decade to take slaves for his army.

I know editorial killed the Fantastic Four magazine, what I mean is the decision to keep using Ben and Johnny in separate teams while retiring Reed and Sue and the kids. Because in-universe, why in the world wouldn't Ben and Johnny help them on their multiversal adventures? Why did they keep those two if they're trying to kill the franchise?

Uncanny Avengers is pretty decent right now, and much better than Hickman's run, which was so over long and convoluted it would probably give Grant Morrison a headache  I've yet to meet anyone who can actually explain what the heck the entire Infinity event was even about, or all the horrible characters Hickman stuck in the Avengers (like Aleph) who are now in comic book limbo probably forever (luckily). Hickman spent years and 2-3 different books telling a story that even Grant Morrison at his worst probably could have told more concisely, and in half the issues. I think hickman has done good work in the past (like his Fantastic Four run, which was good except for the time he forgot to google how old the Power Pack actually are nowadays before he wrote them into a few issues), but Hickman's Avengers was overwritten, under thought, and just painfully bad. Outside of Heroes Reborn Avengers and Rick Remender's Uncanny Avengers, we'll probably never have a worse Avengers run then Hickman's.

Luckily, he's gone, and even if he comes back to Marvel it almost certainly won't be on Avengers. There hasn't been a readable Avengers book for years, and now we have several. My forced exile from Avengers books has made me crave new Avengers books (kind of like how the horrible Superior Spider-Man made me long for real Spider-Man stories), and now we get a bunch from different writers. Its a good time to be a Marvel fan. Not a perfect time (Steve Rogers and the real Thor need to take back their title/hammer ASAP, the whole X-Men/Inhuman situation needs to end, the FF need a book and Mark Waid needs to be writing a Avengers team that isn't filled with children) but its probably the best time for the big Marvel books since Bendis left Avengers.

I'm actually really enjoying Jane Foster as Thor. I think we can all agree it won't last forever, so why not try to actually enjoy it for what it is?

Funnily enough, I didn't come back to Spider-Man until I heard about what they were doing with Superior Spider-Man. It sounded interesting so I thought I would check it out and I ended up really enjoying it. And again, I knew it wasn't going to be permanent. Any of the fanboys out there who lost their shit (and I am not saying you were one of them) over losing Peter Parker seriously needed to turn in their comic book reading credentials. How any of them could believe it was going to be a permanent change is beyond me.

I did actually try to read Superior Spider-Man. I wasn't a fan of the idea, but I read the first two or three issues. I really disliked it, so I didn't continue. So, I did give it a chance. In general, I can be ok with changes like that (I thought that Dick grayson as Batman, for example, was decent, and Wally West Flash was great for years), I just didn't find Doc Ock to be a "superior" Spider-Man. I didn't like the character, and I didn't like how Dan Slott lowered the IQ of everyone around Peter to justify no one really considering him being a different person.

As for Thor, I loathed Jason Aaron's run with the real thor, and I find Jane Foster as thor to be even worse. As an idea its stupid (whoever holds the hammer of Thor gets his power, not his damn name which isn't a title anyway but the first name he was given at birth), and the writing is poor. She's a bad character that is taking away screen (or is that page?) time from a character I like because a mediocre writer doesn't want to write for the real character. Between Inferior Doc Ock and Jane Thorster, Marvel has the worst heroes of this type in modern comics. I tried them, and hated them. We got the real Spider-Man back (although Dan slott really needs to leave the book), so I know eventually Jane Foster will be gone, and a good writer will probably restore the name, powers (and arm) of the real Thor. Just like how Steve Rogers will be de-aged and given his shield back. Until then, its irritating that Marvel won't publish books with their best characters, and has horrible replacements.

Eventually the real characters will come back, but it can take years. It keeps going in cycles, and as a Marvel reader its infuriating. First I got no Spider-Man, then I got no readable Avengers books, now there is no real Thor or Steve Rogers. I just want, I don't know, a year where all the real characters are back, the Avengers have a classic roster, the X-Men aren't sterile/endangered, the F4 have a book, etc. Basically, I want Marvel to drop the gimmicks and just put out good stuff with their real characters. It will all go in circles, but it never seems to happen all at once. For every thing that is restored, something else gets changed.

So glad Secret Wars is finally over. It wasn't bad, it just took too long.

Still enjoying Black Knight. #3 was good. Can't wait for #4.

Superior Spider-Man was awesome and a great kick in the pants for the franchise. I've really enjoyed the entire "Big Time" era.
