March Madness - 2008

Villanova isn't even in Philadelphia (Lower Marion)
Villanova University is in the town of Villanova, in Radnor Township. It borders Lower Merion Township. I revoke your Philadelphia area street cred.

I'm still rooting for IU but they've got to play better than they have been lately!! We won't even talk about the Penn State game today. PSU must have been watching the MSU tape over and over and over!!
I bet mimic is happy tho!!
Well, more like shocked. It was a fluke.

'Canes won in the ACC first round. YEA! Moving on to the quarters. I think they can win another one before probably bowing to UNC if they got to that point. Bring on the NCAA tourney!

The Vols will probably lose in the SEC tourney somewhere along the way. I don't expect them to win it all.

Can't wait to hear some of the bitching from teams that miss out - a number of them have definite flaws right now, but they'll cry loudly if they don't make it.

Bah, I'll say what I want. If I ignore you, nobody will be around to contradict me. :p Yeah, I know Villanova's in Radnor, not Lower Merion (I'm sure I knew how to spell Lower Merion correctly at some point as well), my brain must have not been working when I wrote that. My point is still there, though, it's not really a Philadelphia University.

In Big 5 news, both Temple and St. Joe's are still in the A-10 tournament, while Villanova is out of the Big East. I don't care about Penn or LaSalle (who lost to Temple, btw) ;)

No bitching from me. The Gators just lost to 'Bama, so they will not make the dance. They had to win out to make it. Looks like the NIT for them.

It sucks when your whole team leaves for the NBA, doesn't it?

The only way my alma mater would get in is if they won their conference tournament, which they didn't even come close to doing.
Same here. My alma mater (MN) is still technically alive, but after their anemic outing against Northwestern in the 1st round of the Big Ten tourney, it's only a matter of time until they start looking forward to that NIT bid. A big improvement over last year, though.

Yeah, Bonz, the Gators lost a ton of talent from last year. Losing in the first round of the tourney pretty much cinches they'll be out, but I'm sure they'll be back.

I've got Tennessee playing today at 1 p.m. and Miami at 2:30. My afternoon is full of tourney hoops this afternoon. I expect they both ought to win these games, but both are pretty much tourney locks, so seeding is really all that is at stake.

The bad thing about this time of year is that we'll be seeing a lot more of Billy Packer. Man, I cannot STAND Billy Packer!!

Did anybody see that a large number of companies are working to block the NCAA tourney web site so that workers won't be watching ballgames all day next week and maybe crashing their company networks? Pretty funny.

Looks like Oregon is headed for the NIT as well. I'd be really surprised if they got in the real tournament after last night's defeat to Wazzu.

Good win for Stanford. I'm hoping for the rematch between UCLA but if the Bruins lose tonight, that's good too. I know the Cardinal are already in the Tourny, but they might now be a 4 seed after last week. If they win the Pac Ten Tournament, they could go back up to a three.

UT wasn't all that great, but hung on to dump SoCar today. The 'Canes fell apart late to VT, but they'll be in the tourney anyway, so not a big deal. Of course, Billy P himself was calling the ACC tourney. Can't he lose his voice for a few weeks?

Man, lots of excitement in the Georgia Dome tonight with the weather and possibly a tornado hitting the edge of the roof tonight. One game was delayed (and finished an hour later), but the second game was postponed. They'll figure out in the morning if they can play Saturday there. Watching the video on tv was a little scary, with the scaffolding and skywalks swaying high up under the roof.

I heard they want to have Georgia-Kentucky play early Saturday, and have the winner play Miss State that evening!

Thats really not fair to the winner. Any idea where they'll play if they can't use the dome??

I just heard something about moving the games over the Georgia Tech.

In Big East news, both St. Joe's and Temple are playing in the A-10 final. Aside from being a fun matchup (I wish it was in the palestra, instead of Atlantic City), it'll guarantee at least one Philly team in the NCAA tournament.

Fair really doesn't come into play for the SEC tourney any more. Once they decided not to play the final game last night (considering the damage they've found this morning all around the downtown area, that was a very wise decision), the winner of that game would have to play twice today. There wasn't a really good way around that. They talked about playing that game and doing the two semifinal games Sunday and having co-champs, but the NCAA says that if they want an automatic qualifier, they have to complete the tourney by selection time Sunday.

It's just going to be family, cheerleaders, credentialed folks, etc. at Tech. Only seats a fraction of the Dome, so that seems to be the best thing to do. Philips Arena initially didn't seem to have the same damage, but there's enough damage in the area, that it's better to just let the cleanup begin there and shift away from the CNN plaza area.

My brother lives only 10 minutes away from the Dome and didn't get much worse than high winds and heavy rain, but he can see some of the blown out windows and damage from his condo.

I finally saw the replay of the last few seconds of the Minnesota victory over Indiana, yesterday. The first thing that went through my mind - just like every sportswriter out there - was Laettner's shot to beat Ky. But man... That Minn-Indy ending had so much tension, so many swings of emotion in those last few seconds....... UNREAL!!!!

I'm pissed. No. I'm livid.

Television conspired against me this afternoon. First, it turns out DirectTV has fucked around with our satellite package without telling us and removed ESPN. Yes. ESPN. We still have ESPN 2, ESPN News, and ESPN Classic, but NOT ESPN. Fortunately (for the time being), both ESPN and my local CBS affiliate were showing the Duke/Clemson game. However, a tornado warning occurred south of the Durham area and my CBS affiliate spent the majority of the second half jabbering on and on about the various colors on the screen that no one could possibly care about, even the people in the affected areas. Oh, yes, it was split screen, but you could barely make out what was going on in the game and you definitely couldn't make out the score! To top it off, the annoying meteorologist droned every five minutes about going to some digital channel if you wanted to watch the game. Finally, they were generous enough to let me watch the last five minutes of the game. GRRRRR...

Oh. And Duke lost to Clemson because they were sloppy the whole time (at least, in the parts I was able to watch).

Every year it seems like some team with a losing record gets an invitation. This year's 65th seed is Coppin State (16-20). Stuff like this makes the automatic bid concept look stupid.

I wasn't unlucky enough to draw Coppin State, but on one board I bought into, I drew UMBC. Not only had I never heard of them, I had to look up what the abbreviation stood for. That's a pretty good indication I'm not going to see any money back on that venture.
