At first, it sounded like this guy was a candidate for another Darwin Award. But, after reading the article, things don’t seem quite so clear-cut. Complicating the issue further is the fact that no one is quite sure whether the incident happened on public or private property.

So . . . what’s your opinion? Who, if anyone, is at fault here?

I thought this was gonna be some guy who got stuck in a whales blowhole...even had a good perverted joke for it...

I think it sounds like a freak accident; no one is at fault per se.

The authorities might want to post signs warning about the potential dangers, just so people might be fore-warned about the risks of getting too close.

Going by this video (not showing the incident involving David Potts, but illustrative of the conditions at the blowhole in question)

I'd say that it was probably rash of him to be standing right next to the blowhole with his back turned to the incoming surf. He placed himself at risk.

Yeah, i had no idea what a blowhole was (and i was going to post the Kramer hits golfball into whale blowhole video.)

Learn something new everyday.

Bummer for the guy.

I feel sorry for the guy. He should have exercised more caution. These things can be very dangerous, and what happened is no surprise, but again, it's a shame that it killed him.

It's a deceptive sight. The spray of the water looks like it'll just blow you over, not suck you into the hole. I wonder if there are ample warnings about this on the path leading to the blowhole.

But yeah, once inside you can forget it. It's like going into a blender. His body was probably crushed against the rocks inside upon the next wave swell. Really sad this guy not only lost his life but left behind a wife going through extreme cancer surgery.

Until proven otherwise, I am going to pretend that he got transported to another dimension full of puppies and rainbows. It's way less depressing.

I tend to agree. What happened to David Potts is terribly sad and unfortunate, but I’d call it a case of death by misadventure. In plain, non-legal language: Sometimes Shit Just Fucking Happens.
