I find it curious that someone has to defend his opinion about Superman's character to such an extend.

Thinking of Superman II, there are several things about the character that annoyed me. His decision to give up his powers, then how he became a pussy without his powers (and then even worse, how he becomes a bully when he gets his powers back), and his decision to kill the three Kryptonians even though they didn't have their powers anymore. I didn't like it back then, and I don't like it now.

In Superman Returns, I hated how he becomes a pussy when he loses his powers, and how he misuses his powers to spy on Lois.

And seriously, no amount of "But it's been done this way before." is going to change that. Because the way it's been done before is also how I didn't like it.

Kryptonite doesn't just take away his powers, it slowly and painfully kills him. In that example, he was under the influence of Kryptonite. Traditionally, being exposed to Kryptonite causes Superman to lie helplessly in pain until somebody takes it away.

I have no love whatsoever for the Donner Superman movies. They were just ok to me as a kid and they feel extremely dated and of their time now.

I can safely say that I have never liked a live action Superman film. That's a little depressing actually.

I know people here don't really like Confused Matthew, but he just started his Man of Steel review, by reviewing the first part, the Krypton stuff. He usually releases full reviews over a few weeks time, so expect other parts soon. I am sharing this because it's funnier than he's been for a while, and he's right on the money.

I think Donner's films (I'm talking the first one and the Donner/Lester version of the second) were great. It really felt that this is who Superman is as a person... someone we can all hope to be. He doesn't steel clothes from people, as he did in Man of Steel, or come of like a snide bully. And, during the big city battle with supervillains, he concentrated less of his efforts on actually fighting Zod, and more on making sure that people didn't get hurt. This is Superman, folks. Like it or not, that's who Superman is. After Returns came out, people complained that he didn't punch anyone, but then, in Man of Steel, he punched Zod literally 50 times in the film, but that didn't make movie any better, did it?

The thing about Superman, and this is probably why I really love the Dean Cain/Teri Hatcher show, is that he is a genuinely good guy. No guy haunted by ghosts of his past. No guy who is haunted by the death of his/one parent. Etc... he is a naturally good person who happens to also be special because of his superpowers. The Dean Cain superman was no pussy when he lost his powers. He was a normal human being with additional powers. I think they went the right route there when they decided that Clark Kent is his personality, and Superman is his mask.

Man of Steel was the real world? I must have slept through the last alien invasion. NyQuil is damn powerful stuff.

^ A more naturalistic reality made up or real people and real reactions as opposed to the more fanciful reality you'd see with the Adam West series.

The Nostalgia Critic recently did a review of Man of Steel. Doug Walker (Nostalgia Critic) who hates the film and Joe Vargas (Angry Joe) who loves the film did a joint review looking at the pros and cons of the film. I think the review did a pretty good job at covering both sides of this debate and it's worth a watch if you have the time. Unfortunately, you need quite a bit of time.

Given the extreme love it or hate it reception Man of Steel received they decided to make a lengthy review. 49 minutes to be exact. Yeah, a bit overkill, but it's worth watching.

Watched the whole thing. They obviously put a lot of effort into making that. I didn't always agree with what Walker had to say but he was entertaining and made some good points none the less without going the clichéd "it's not comic booky enough" route.

I liked Reeves' portrayal, where Superman is the real person, and he can have fun being a bit klutzy as Clark. That is what works for me.

Different writers handle the Clark Kent/Superman/Kal-El thing differently.

Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman, The 1986 John Byrne Superman comc run, and Smallvile for a time all presented Clark as the dominant personage. Clark was the real identity and Superman was the secret identity.

Man of Steel, New 52 reboot, the 2003-2009 reboot of Superman, and the Richard Donner films portray Superman/Kal-El as the dominant person and Clark Kent is the mask.

So it varies.

Yeah, there was alot to love about Lois & Clark, wasn't there? Even in the last two years, when things started going south, there was enough quality left for it to still be enjoyable.

Perhaps we should compromise? The people who want to see a flawed badass hero can watch the new Superman and the people who want to see the old noble and astounding Superman can go to Thor movies.

Because as we all know Thor never kills his enemies and is lighthearted afterward?

The Oscars released their ten movies being considered for the Best Visual Effects, and Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder's Man of Steel is not among them.

The ten movies making up the list include:

The Lone Ranger
Oblivion
Star Trek Into Darkness

World War Z

Man of Steel was also absent from the People's Choice Awards.
