Man of Steel Appreciation

I think that we will progressively get more of the lighter flare as we go on with Superman in the DCCU. I think this film starts serious as a good foundation to the universe.

Have you seen the Batman v Superman trailer? It looks like the opposite is true.

I have and just from the use of light in the movie, I can see it being the "dawn". I feel like this movie is going to be about Superman and Batman finding a way to help each other become more, become better in the end.

I'm sure I'll enjoy it a darn sight more than the latest Marvel offerings, which just seem like poor computer games.

I love Winter Soldier, one of my favorite comic book movies, but Guardians and Ultron have only been ok for me.

Winter Soldier was surprisingly decent with great live-action chases and fights. The first Avengers, Guardians and Ultron were just a load of CGI nonsense that I just couldn't engage with for me.

I liked various aspects of MoS, but I found the Nolan/Sneider approach to be heavy, dull, pretentious, and joyless.

Why can't we have some good old-fashioned escapism?

I think a lighter action/adventure tone more like the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have fit Superman better.

Kor

Maybe, but for me the lighter, comic booky Marvel style is frankly starting to feel pretty routine and predictable by this point (with the exception of Winter Soldier, which actually did have much more of a grounded, real world style).

And actually what I loved most about MOS was that it made the arrival of a superhero in our world seem like a major, wondrous, life-altering EVENT again-- something that makes the entire world stop in their tracks and go "whoa, what is going on here? How is this possible?!?"

Unlike in the Marvel universe where another superhero shows up and the world just seems to shrug it's shoulders (and that's assuming we even see what the world's reaction IS to any of this, which we often don't).

Co-favourite with first Reeve movie (the latter a sentimental favourite). Very much looking forward to the next instalment.

I don't understand why they want to turn Superman into a killer.

Superman does not kill.

There are, literally, dozens of examples disproving that assertion. And there is NO evidence they seek to make Superman habitually turn to killing as the best response to a given situation. To suggest otherwise reveals a serious misreading of the events portrayed in MoS.

Superman does not kill.

He has before. Zod, in fact. The idea of having him do that in the movie may have been lifted from the comics themselves, way back into the 1980s.

Welcome to 1988.

So folks who assert that this aspect of MoS constituted some kind of break with comic continuity or disrespect for the character's history are flat-out wrong and have no leg to stand on.

Given people are still worked up about that, I'm curious how the promised scene in the next one where

Superman kills everyone in the UN and then kicks the President's head off and declares himself 'Supreme Ruler'
will play with the audience.

I always wonder why people are ok with Superman killing Zod in Superman II and not MOS, is it just because it's played more for laughs with a cellophane S? I am glad that in MOS he has the agony of the choice that I am sure is going to haunt him in BvS and create great growth opportunities.

Superman kills Zod. Big whoop. Yes, I know he's not a killer by nature. But when Superman realized that there was no other way to stop Zod without everyone else on Earth being endangered mortally, well.....needs of the many.

Superman screamed in angst when he was forced to kill Zod. Not only was he forced to kill, to break his prime principle to save the world, but he was forced to kill a fellow last survivor of Krypton. (essentially, a brother) It's not like he's going to turn into a habitual killer.

A pacifist may one day actually be forced to fight.....and he/she might deeply regret having done so....but if it was to save the life of a friend or loved one, it does not mean they've given up on their pacifism. It meant doing the right thing regardless of how they hold theirselves, and such a person may hope/pray that they never have to do something so distasteful, so disturbing, again in their life time.

^ Agreed. It's mystifying to me how anyone can look at that scene and Superman's reaction and conclude that he actually enjoyed killing Zod or that this was somehow the beginning of a new trend for him.

Because fans suck. They all have this one image in their head of how their fandom should be, and if it is even slightly off, they go nuts.

Amen! It's when our minds aren't open and we hold on to our expectations, that's when we get mad and pout that they ruined things. Superheroes have always been in flux, constantly growing and changing, especially Superman, 75 years means things will change. It's nice to see DC not just regurgitate what has been seen on screen before and give us something new and challenging.
