Man of Steel Appreciation

I loved Man of Steel. It looked gorgeous and the CGI looked pretty realistic. It was just so refreshing to actually see Superman fight someone else with superpowers. And I thought they did a good job of portraying his polite and humble side. He wasn't grimdark as I was afraid he would be.

I have no problems with the ending. Supes was completely outclassed at every step of the battle. He was never in control of the situation. And him snapping Zod's neck is right out of the comic book. And in the comics it kicked off a multi-year story where he had to deal with the guilt of that death that was really interesting.

I completely agree with you on this. It makes for great story and drama in the future.

I thought all the stuff with Kevin Costner were the best parts of the movie, especially the little flashback scene at the end

"I just wish he could have been here to finally see it happen."
"He saw it, Clark, believe me."
:weep:

I didn't see it until after buying a copy a few months ago, and have watched it at least three time since. On an old TV built in the early 90s. I was reading the comics during the 50s and 60s. George Reeves WAS Superman for me. I didn't see Kirk Alyn's serials until I found them on VHS in the early 90s. Cavill does a good job filling the suit.

I haven't kept up on changes to the mythos. I liked Krypton better than in the Christopher Reeve films. My only "Huh?" moment is the elimination of Zod as a threat if these guys are supposed to be invulnerable.

I didn't have much nice to say about MoS on first viewing, but I started warming up to it on the second viewing and by the third viewing I'm now of the opinion that its an enjoyable (if definitely flawed) movie. Clark's human mom was very good, definitely a step up from the little we'd seen of Clark's parents in the other movies. A lot of the action was done well (the destruction itself doesn't bother me anymore since it is mostly Zod's fault, although when people try to claim there wasn't a huge loss of life that still kind of annoys me), and we got to see Superman do some really cool stuff that the earlier movies couldn't pull off.

I also thought that Russel Crowe is decent as Jor-El, and he definitely has more to do than Brando. Cavil also isn't bad as Clark, although I'd wish we'd gotten more scenes of him interacting with people (that weren't Lois or his parents) like a normal person, not as Superman. I don't think he got enough time to show as much personality as Clark as I would have liked, although I thought what was there was good. I'd still put Superman I and II over MoS if I was ranking them, but MoS was probably the best DC superhero movie since the 1989 Batman.

Sorry I can't say anything good about this movie. I popped the Blu-ray back in a few months back and tried watching it from the 1 hour mark (where I had previously left off) and I had to pop the disc back out after10 minutes as it just crashed and burned on dull. Even the acting was pretty wooden, and it seemed like the actors just turned up for a paycheck. Sorry, but this is one movie where I could find nothing to say that was good about the movie.

As much as I love the Christopher Reeve Superman and grew up watching Dean Cain as Superman on Lois and Clark, I have to say that Henry Cavill is PERFECT as Superman. That's why I'm giving Zack Snyder the benefit of the doubt with Ben Affleck as Batman, because every casting choice in Man of Steel was spot on.

I also love the fact that the denizens of Smallville and the Daily Planet aren't drooling morons and they know that Clark Kent is Superman with glasses.

Just saw this video posted, showing what the movie might look like with the color amped up (sorry, not sure how to post videos directly into a thread).

I won't deny that does look pretty good, in a side by side comparison, but while watching the actual movie I have to say the color desaturation has never bothered me at all. And in fact I think the more muted colors helps sell the mood of the story being told a lot better than if it looked all bright and colorful like this-- something the people doing the color corrections always seem to ignore.

^ I am with you. I think the look is on purpose and I think the films will continue to get more colorful as the heroes begin to emerge. The scenes from BvS already look to have more color to them. Nice story telling touch.

I disliked quite a lot about the film but since this thread is a love fest

It had Toby from the West Wing in it and that made me happy

I actually was presently surprised by Man of Steel, and I am really looking forward to Batman vs. Superman. I've never been a huge Superman fan, and I really didn't think I could like a Superman film as much as I did Man of Steel.

I liked how Clark Kent was a complex character who went through some growing pains.

I liked Michael Shannon's incarnation of Zod.

I liked Russell Crowe's incarnation of Jor El, and the backstory of Krypton.

In many ways, Man of Steel is the "Rocky IV" of Superman movies. :techman:

I thought it was an awesome movie. They gave us a Kryton we'd never seen before, the characters were complex and up to date and Michael Shannon's Zod was almost a religious figure this time instead of a mere comic book styled villain. i loved the music and living metal Kryton technology. The movie really felt like an epic.

I liked various aspects of MoS, but I found the Nolan/Sneider approach to be heavy, dull, pretentious, and joyless.

Why can't we have some good old-fashioned escapism?

I think a lighter action/adventure tone more like the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have fit Superman better.

I think that we will progressively get more of the lighter flare as we go on with Superman in the DCCU. I think this film starts serious as a good foundation to the universe.

Thoroughly enjoyed Man of Steel.
While I still love Superman II, especially the Richard Donner Cut, Man of Steel makes Superman II look like an extremely guilty pleasure by comparison.

Jor-El, Kal-El (Supes), and Zod were badassed. Loved the more fully realized Krypton. Enjoyed the cynicism of the US Army colonel toward Supeeman, and his recant with: "This man is not our enemy! "

Loved the new Superman outfit. Good bye/ good riddance red Fruit of the Looms!

Especially loved the bad guys. .... they were bad ass without being campy.

And the slugfest between Supes and the bad Kryptonians was epic. ... worthy of a super powered fight between metahumans!

I've only seen it once, and that was on the big screen, I've got it on Blu Ray but I've not got round to watching it yet. I enjoyed it quite a lot, it certainly delivered on the spectacle front - though I thought the destruction went on a little too long and I thought it was lacking a bit of charm and humour, but otherwise I liked it.

The first 2 Reeves movies will always have a special place in my heart that I can't ever imagine topping for various reasons. Hell even Superman III is worth a watch for a bit of a laugh, or for the drunk/scrapyard scene alone. I enjoyed Superman Returns too.

I know it'll never happen but I wish they'd use the classic Williams theme for all Superman movies...
