Mama Mia!

Its a great film, and it dosnt matter how Peirce sings, its the words that count.

In a MUSICal? Again that's a MUSICal, not a LYRICal.

They both count, and delivery can easily kill them both no matter how "good" the source material is. If people don't listen, there's no point of having the song there at all.

Plus, it's not like the lyrics are all that deep. It's ABBA.

My wife and I haven't seen the film, yet. However, we did see the touring production of the stage show last year, and loved it.

A) Peirce dosnt kill the songs, he just comes off like a dad singing in the pub, which is kind of the point.

B) Abba is one of the best selling and constantly sold groups in the world, if its not to your taste, it dosnt mean some of their songs dont have very moving lyrics, especially in the context of the film

Skopelos, where it was filmed, looks divine.
I'm with you there. The setting was AMAZING. I wish they would have done exactly the same story without the music, or the same music with a different story. The songs seemed dropped in by aliens who know nothing about musical theater structure.

It's why almost all the Juke Box musicals since then have failed. Mamma Mia was the first in the current wave on Broadway, and the live stage version is SO much better than the film. (Primarily because it IS live).

I heard a clip of Pierce Brosnan's attempt to sing.

That poor guy needs to fire his agent.

Yeah, his singing was atrocious, but it didn't matter: for some reason I can't put my finger on yet, he worked quite well in that role. And part of me thinks he knows he's not the greatest singer--doesn't matter to him either.

I'll agree that the movie was quite fun. Not great, but fun. And I think I preferred the movie over the Broadway production.

I liked it. I didn't _love_ it, and I'd rather see it in Vegas again, and I'll recommend the musical soundtrack over the movie soundtrack in a heartbeat, but it had its good points, and it was entertaining and fun to watch. I don't know whether I'd buy it myself on DVD, but provided it's released with decent extras I'll at least wish-list it.

Pierce Brosnan? Not so much.

It's worth watching once, at least to form your own opinion. My advice? If you can't see a live showing, see this one. And the setting really does make me want to visit Greece.

^

I saw this just this afternoon and I really enjoyed it. It was fun and entertaining, and I don't care that the cast weren't all pitch-perfect, it injected a bit more character into things.

Well, I went to the Sing-A-Long Mamma Mia! It was fun. A lot of the audience didn't sing much except for Dancing Queen. I wish more people had sung, I felt like a dork singing Money Money Money!

My mom and I want to go to the sing-along version! I hope there will be one near us.

As there are something like seven versions of it doing the rounds in different parts of the world at the moment it shouldn't be too hard to find one.....

If we were in the same country I'd have gone to see it with you and sung along with everything, it's fun! :D

Re: Mamma Mia on DVD!

Although I'm not a big fan of musicals, I consider myself an ABBA enthusiast. I haven't seen a live musical performance of the show, and I didn't see the movie in the theater when it came out. So just out of curiosity, I decided to pick up the DVD this week and started watching the special features.

I haven't seen the entire movie yet, but I must say I'm a tad disappointed. First of all, they changed some of the lyrics as well as the arrangements. Some of the songs don't even fit the scenario. That, I'm willing to overlook, but the vocal renditions leave much to be desired. Most of the songs focus on Meryl Streep singing with those two ugly bitches. :scream: And Pierce Brosnan? My God! What would Simon Cowell say?!? Has anyone seen a live performance of this musical? Please tell me it's nothing like the movie.

Anyway, I'll probably try to watch the DVD this weekend or whenever I get a chance. For now, I've lost my enthusiasm.

Re: Mamma Mia on DVD!

It's been q couple of years since we saw the stage show, but was a blast. As best I can recall, the lyrics were rigth on the mark with the original songs. The cast had a great energy and overall it was jsut plain goofy fun. The curtain call was the best part though, as the cast came out in full vintage 70's outlandish costume as if they were ABBA.

I totally agree with you on this...I enjoyed ACROSS THE UNIVERSE much more, even with its arrangement changes...

I grew up listening to Abba. They were my dad's favourite. I don't really have a desire to see Mama Mia! It's because the story seems forced around the songs and I have my own ideas what the various songs mean. OTOH, I love Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and I'm planning to see the stage version of that.

^I need to see the movie again.

Granted, if you're not seeing Mamma Mia for the music, you're probably not going to be all that thrilled with it. I don't know whether I would have bought the DVD for myself, but I did put it on my wishlist and apparently someone saw fit to gift me with it.
