While TMP is still my least favourite of the prequels, it was on tv a few weeks ago and I dopped in and out of it and enjoyed it. The lightsaber duel at the end can hold its own with any sequence from Star Wars, old or new.

Agreed there. Between the badass Darth Maul, the frenetic lightsaber action and the awesome music, that sequence easily rates as my favorite of the prequels.

I've long been a fan of Phantom Menace. I think aside from the unnecessary forced comedy with Jar-Jar it's not so bad. I totally understand the WTF reaction people had to it when they first saw it. I had the same reaction when I saw it in theaters with my best friend...but then after multiple viewings came to understand that it was clearly Lucas' attempt at doing a political film. Politics and Star Wars as we've discussed in other threads doesn't work well together lol.

The Jar Jar comedy bits are pretty forced but I still don't think the character is a total wash. When he isn't acting all slapsticky he's endearing in an innocent sort of way. I love the acting in the "Yousa people gonna die?" scene. There's this moment when he realizes the Gungans are gonna get "pasted" and he has this hard gulp and talks about how his people are warriors and he seemed 100% genuine to me. I think if Jar Jar had more moments like that in the movie and less moments where he's tripping over his dick people would have loved him.
