Magnificent Ferengi

Elephant999

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Just watched this again and it made me realise just how good an episode it is. I know that some people don’t like Ferengi centred episodes, and in the main I dont. I thought Ferengi Love Songs was am abomination, for example.

I thought Armin Shimerman was fantastic in this, and it showed different Ferengi personalities coming together. I particularly liked the Ferengi assassin!

I laughed out loud at Quark’s “Can you please turn him off?” About Keevan at the end. Just naturally funny.

What do others think of this episode?

I liked Far Beyond the Stars for it being a bit different. However, it was a little too clever for its own good in places.

One of my favourite DS9 episodes. One of the only episodes that has ever made me laugh out loud. Keevan was hilarious: "I *HATE* Ferengi!". The petty bickering which lead to Keevan's demise, and the way they all eventually came together for a common cause made it a pretty memorable episode for me.

The dynamic between the group of Ferengi was amazing. Coupled with the dour nature of the Vortas and Moogie smacking Quark on the head, priceless!

My favorite quotes:

LECK: This is the sloppiest, most amateurish operation I've ever seen. If you ever do something like this again, count me in.
QUARK: You'll be the first one I call. (to Nog) If I even think about doing something like this again, shoot me.

On TNG, they were depicted as monkey-like with all their mannerisms. Plus in one episode it was revealed they were cannibals I think?

Well, they jumped around a lot and held their ears in pain down on that Planet of Thunderstorms in "The Last Outpost". Sort of understandable for folks with good hearing...

Cannibals? Since when did a Ferengi eat a Ferengi? Now, a freshly ground Kelpien... Who could resist such a delicious dish? (Of course, if you boil your cod carefully enough and add a bit of Kaferian apple juice, the customer usually can't tell the difference.)

Picard said a lot of crazy things. His Irumodic Syndrome syndrome seemed to start from the first episode of TNG

Maybe Picard had an off-screen adventure to a parallel universe in season 1, which explaines that he got to know a different kind of Ferengi....

Picard said it during Encounter at Farpoint.

The quote goes like this:

ZORN: Captain, the Ferengi would be very interested in a base like this.
PICARD: Fine. I hope they find you as tasty as they did their past associates.

There's no need to interpret this literally. Picard could just as easily have meant that the Ferengi would exploit Zorn ruthlessly until there was nothing more they could gain from him.
And even if it was meant literally, remember they had never even seen a Ferengi ship or met a ferengi up until this time, so this would be the era of wild, grossly distorted tales preceding actual first contact. This is also confirmed by part of Picard's begin log at the start of The Last Outpost:
If we succeed in this chase, it will be Starfleet's first look at a life form which, discounting rumour, we know almost nothing about.

BRUNT: When do we leave?
QUARK: We're not leaving. Not with you.
ROM: That's one thing we can all agree on.
LECK: No one likes Liquidators.
NOG: Or even ex-liquidators.
QUARK: The team has spoken.
GAILA: Besides, there's a twenty bar reward to consider.
NOG: Better to split it five ways than six.
BRUNT: Fine. I'll just get in my ship and leave.
(Brunt heads for the door, and a knife thuds into the doorframe.)
LECK: Did you say ship?
BRUNT: That's right. Why?
ROM: Now we are six.

This exchange is gold - pure gold. I love Brunt.
